Description: Many human diseases are associated with the overproduction of oxygen free radicals that inflict cell damage. A manganese(II) complex with a bis(cyclohexylpyridine)-substituted macrocyclic ligand (M40403) was designed to be a functional mimic of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes that normally remove these radicals. M40403 had high catalytic SOD activity and was chemically and biologically stable in vivo. Injection of M40403 into rat models of inflammation and ischemia-reperfusion injury protected the animals against tissue damage. Such mimics may result in better clinical therapies for diseases mediated by superoxide radicals.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Salvemini, D -- Wang, Z Q -- Zweier, J L -- Samouilov, A -- Macarthur, H -- Misko, T P -- Currie, M G -- Cuzzocrea, S -- Sikorski, J A -- Riley, D P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1999 Oct 8;286(5438):304-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉MetaPhore Pharmaceuticals, 1910 Innerbelt Business Center Drive, St. Louis, MO 63114, USA. dsalvemini@metaphore.com〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10514375" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: [Auszug] For various reasons, argon is the most suitable substance for such a study; but until recently only one of the three coefficients, Cp, has been known accurately for the solid8. Last year, Stewart4 determined the isothermal compressibility (XT) at 65 and 77 K. and Barker and Dobbs5, in this ...

Notes: [Auszug] VARIOUS hypotheses have been advanced concerning the way in which the nucleoprotein complex is built up from its two components, nucleic acid and protein (histone or protamine). On one hand, it has been suggested that the combination of the two constituents is intimate and that the protein ...

Notes: [Auszug] WE have briefly mentioned elsewhere1 that we have considered some feasible structures for the insulin molecule by combining the amino-acid sequences of Sanger and his co-workers2 with the a-helix hypothesis of Pauling, Corey and Branson3 and arrived at a limited number of solutions. As this work ...

Notes: [Auszug] RECENT stereo-chemical considerations1'2 and X-ray investigations3'4 on the structure of deoxyribose nucleic acids have established with a fair amount of certainty that the structure of the poly-nucleotide chain is a helical one, with the phosphate groups lying on the outside of the helix and the ...

Notes: [Auszug] I AM encouraged by Dr. Dawson's most interesting communication to present some crystallographic results on {J-lactoglobulin which have hitherto only been available in a thesis1 or in articles2 mainly of a review character. Attention will be confined to the dry orthorhombic crystals, often described ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE striking successes of the methods of X-ray diffraction analysis as applied to single crystals composed of relatively small molecules have tended to turn attention away from the usefulness of less detailed analyses in the case of substances of high molecular weight and considerable complexity. ...

Notes: [Auszug] WE have examined by X-ray methods crystals of the protein material prepared by F. C. Bawden and N. W. Pirie1 from tomato plants suffering from bushy stunt disease. The crystals were in the form of isotropic rhombic dodecahedra of average diameter of only 0.01 mm. Consequently, no ...

Notes: [Auszug] RECENT publications by Wrinch1, and in particular by Wrinch and Langmuir2, have suggested that the Patterson analyses obtained by Crowfoot3 for air-dried insulin crystals can be interpreted with some precision if one assumes that the basis of the structure of the insulin molecule is the skeleton of ...
