    Description: Abstract The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Global‐scale Observations of the Limb and Disk ultraviolet spectrograph has been imaging the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), regions of the ionosphere with enhanced electron density north and south of the magnetic equator, since October 2018. The initial 3 months of observations was during solar minimum conditions, and they included observations in December solstice of unanticipated variability and depleted regions. Depletions are seen on most nights, in contrast to expectations from previous space‐based observations. The variety of scales and morphologies also pose challenges to understanding of the EIA. Abrupt changes in the EIA location, which could be related to in situ measurements of large‐scale depletion regions, are observed on some nights. Such synoptic‐scale disruptions have not been previously identified.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of immunosuppression on the course of experimental aspergillosis was investigated. Rabbits (2.2–2.5 kg) were divided into four groups. Group one received no drugs and was given 106 spores intravenously (IV) or intratracheally (IT) on two occasions one week apart. Weight gain or loss, appearance or disappearance of aspergillus antigen and/or antibody, and detection of aspergillosis at autopsy were followed. Group 2 received weekly injections of cyclophosphamide (70 mg/kg) starting two weeks prior and throughout the experiment. Animals in group three received either 1.14 or 2.25 mg/kg/day methyl prednisolone and group four received 2.28 mg/kg/ day methyl prednisolone and 70 mg/kg/week cyclophosphamide. In group one, serum antigen levels were detected within a week of infection followed by antibody (I.D.) levels for three months. All animals grew normally and no infection was detected at autopsy. In group 2, animals survived one but not two challenges and had Ag but no Ab. In group 3, animals survived two challenges at the lower drug level but not the higher. All animals in group 4 succumbed to one challenge.

    Notes: Abstract Chronic candidosis was established in rabbits by the injection I.V. of 2×106 cells of C. albicans. The rabbits were assayed every week for 14 weeks for the appearance of Candida antigen and anticandida antibodies in serum and other body fluids. Tests were carried out in double diffusion plates; antigen against hyperimmune rabbit sera and antibody against Candida cell sap antigen preparation. A sensitive specific passive hemagglutination procedure was also developed which used chromate treated cells. In rabbits with chronic candidosis not treated with cyclophosphamide antigen was detected in 4x concentrated serum between the fifth and sixth week. At about the same time antibodies were demonstrable and theafter antigen was no longer detected. Maximum antibody titer occurred between the eight to 10th week and disappeared thereafter. If cyclophosphamide 30 mg/kg was given at this point, anticandida antibodies reappeared in high titers, persisted for three to four weeks and then disappeared. At autopsy no evidence of candidosis was present. If rabbits were pretreated with cyclophosphamide 60 mg/kg for one week before inoculation and given the drug weekly thereafter no antibody was detectable but antigen and antibody were present in body fluids (not serum) at post mortem.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Pilzarten wurden einer erhöhten Temperatur ausgesetzt und ihre Anpassungsfähigkeit als eine Funktion der metabolischen Rate und des End-Eh gemessen. Im allgemeinen war die metabolische Rate der untersuchten Pilze bei Temperaturen grösser, der die Organismen gewöhnlich begegneten als das Endpunkt-Eh des Wachstums. Anpassung bei höheren Temperaturen war bei Erdbodensaprophyten verzögert, weniger so in Dermatophyten und sofortig in thermophilen und dimorphen, pathogenen Pilzen. Das End-Eh des Wachstums vonH. capsulatum war gleich dem lebendigen Tiergewebe und mag die Gewebe-Toleranz andeuten.
    Notes: Abstract Species of fungi were subjected to increased temperature and their adaptability was measured as a function of metabolic rate and final Eh. In general, the metabolic rate for the fungi tested was greater at temperatures normally encountered by the organism as was the final Eh of growth. Adaptation to higher imposed temperature was delayed in soil saprophytes, less so in a dermatophyte and immediate in thermophilic and dimorphic pathogenic fungi. The final Eh of growth ofH. capsulatum was similar to that of living animal tissue and may reflect its tissue-tolerance.

    Notes: Abstract In a study of sera from patients with proven or suspected blastomycosis, positive immunodiffusion tests were obtained in all active cases when fresh sera were tested with a cell sap (CS) antigen. False negatives occurred on occasion when an ethanol precipitate (EPF) antigen was used alone. No false positives were found. The CS antigen from the (+) mating type had in common two lines of identity with the (CS) antigen of the (−) type. In addition, other lines were present when the patient was infected with the same mating type as was used for the preparation of the antigen. No differences in the electrophoretic patterns of the enzymes leucine amino peptidase or phosphatase were noted when preparations from the two mating types were compared. However, a distinct pattern was noted when the α esterases of the (+) and (−) mating types were examined. Specific α esterase antibodies were present in patients' sera.

    Description: Underground nuclear explosions (UNEs) produce radionuclide gases that may seep to the surface over weeks to months. The objective of this research was to quantify the impact of uncertainties in hydrologic parameters (fracture aperture, matrix permeability, porosity, and saturation) and season of detonation on the timing of gas breakthrough. Numerical sensitivity analyses were performed, with barometric pumping providing the primary driving force for gas migration, for the case of a 1 kt UNE at 400-m depth of burial. Gas arrival time was most affected by matrix permeability and fracture aperture. Gases having higher diffusivity were more sensitive to uncertainty in the rock properties. The effect of seasonality in the barometric pressure forcing was found to be important, with detonations in March the least likely to be detectable based on barometric data for Rainier Mesa, Nevada. Monte Carlo realizations were performed with all four parameters varying simultaneously to determine their interrelated effects. The Monte Carlo method was also used to predict the window of opportunity for 133 Xe detection from a 1 kt UNE at Rainier Mesa, with and without matching the model to SF 6 and 3 He data from the 1993 Non-Proliferation Experiment. Results from the data-blind Monte Carlo simulations were similar but were biased toward earlier arrival time and less likely to show detectable 133 Xe. The estimated timing of gas arrival may be used to deploy personnel and equipment to the site of a suspected UNE, if allowed under the terms of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty.

    Description: Love waves have the potential to aid in discrimination for anomalous explosion events. We develop a calibrated mathematical formulation for an explosion discriminant that combines Rayleigh- and Love-wave magnitude values and employs an error model that correctly partitions variances among events and stations separately. The discriminant is calibrated using a global data set of 124 earthquakes and 26 nuclear explosions and applied to the May 2009 Democratic Republic of North Korea (DPRK) announced nuclear test, as well as the calibration data set. All 26 explosions were correctly identified; only 6 earthquakes were incorrectly identified as explosions. Compared to an analogous treatment using only Rayleigh data, the combined discriminant improves the DPRK event p -value only nominally but reduces the number of false positives in the calibration data set by 70%, with no additional false negatives. While not dramatically improving the discrimination power for anomalous events, such as the 2009 DPRK test, the combined discriminant proposed here offers improved screening capabilities for typical events.
