Description:
The accompanying key and plate should be found useful to those studying the foraminifera or making use of them for economic purposes.
The keys are first to the families, then to the genera under each family. After the family name in the first key, that to the families, will be found the reference to the plate in this book where the various genera of the family are illustrated. After the genus name in the later keys will be found the page reference to the larger book "Foraminifera, Their Classification and Economic Use " (2nd edition), where the more detailed description of the genu will be found as well as data concerning its geologic range, etc. For one studying the genera of a family with the larger book, it will be possible to see the figures of the various genera for comparison without constantly turning page to find the figures. At the head of each key to a family will be found the reference to the plate of both books. The first reference to a plate with a simple number is to the plates in the larger book, those preceded by the word Key refer to the plates in this volume. The page reference with each family name is to the place where the family is treated in the larger book. The explanations of plates give the age, locality of fossil pecimen , and usually the magnification. The black backgrounds will make the specimens appear more as they do under the microscope, when seen against a black slide or tray.
The key are only intended to give clues to the families and genera, a any abbreviated keys, epecially with the foraminifera, cannot give the full characters. It is expected that the plates will prove more useful than the keys. Figures are given of fossil and recent forms where space is available, and often of other species than those illustrated in the larger book. The two should be used together. (...)
