    Notes: Abstract When diffusion of a vapour in a gaseous medium occurs, any particles suspended in this gaseous mixture will move along the vapour pressure gradient because of the force exerted on them by the diffusing vapour molecules. This effect was first demonstrated by Facy (1) for particulate matter near growing and evaporating water drops. In this paper, quantitative measurements of the velocity, imposed on radioactively marked sub-micron particles (0.03 to 0.1 μ radius), in controlled gradients of water vapour pressure are described. The particle velocity is shown to be a linear function of the vapour pressure gradient over the range measured, such that: (1) $$V_p = 2 \times 10^{ - 4} \frac{{dh}}{{dx}}$$ whereV p is the velocity imposed on the particles (cm/sec), dh/dx is the water vapour pressure gradient (mb/cm). The efficiency for this mechanism in the capturing of the atmospheric aerosol by condensing droplets is considered in the light of these measurements. It is concluded that the fraction of submicron particles, captured by growing droplets in a cloud is generally low. For instance, 100 water droplets per cc growing to 10 μ radius would capture about 5×10−4 of the particulate matter in the surrounding air. Direct experimental verification of this conclusion is presented. In a cloud chamber, droplets were grown up to about 10 μ radius on salt nuclei in an atmosphere containing about 5,000 submicron particles per cc. The particles, were again marked radioactively, and autoradiographic techniques, capable of detecting one marked particle, were used on samples of the droplets obtained by cascade impactor. The autoradiographs showed that the fraction of the particles captured during the growth of the droplets was less than 10−3 per 100 droplets per cc.

    Notes: Adsorption and leaching of the herbicides thiazafluron (1,3-dimethyl-1(5-trifluoromethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)urea), metamitron (4-amino-4,5-dihydro-3-methyl-6-phenyl-1,2,4-tri azin-5-one) and clopyralid (3,6-dichloropicolinic acid) were studied in one sandy and two silty-clay soils. Equilibrium adsorption coefficients (Kd) were measured using a batch equilibration procedure, and mobility was studied in repacked columns of the soils under fluctuating saturated/unsaturated flow conditions. Breakthrough curves (BTCs) were consistent with an inverse relationship between leaching and adsorption with greater mobility of the weakly-adsorbed clopyralid than the more strongly adsorbed thiazafluron or metamitron. The BTC data were used to evaluate the LEACHP simulation model. Following model calibration with respect to hydrological parameters and some of the herbicide degradation rates, the best fits between predicted and observed data were with the less adsorptive and highly mobile clopyralid. In general, the model gave acceptable predictions of the timing of the concentration maxima and the shapes of the BTCs, although earlier breakthrough than that observed was predicted with the less mobile herbicides, thiazafluron and metamitron, in the silty-clay soils. For metamitron, the total amounts leached were not predicted accurately, suggesting more rapid degradation of the herbicide in the soil columns than in the kinetic studies performed in a 1:1 soil:solution ratio shaken system.

    Notes: The adsorption of the herbicide thiazafluron, 1,3-dimethyl-1-(5-trifluoromethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)urea, by three smectites, illite, kaolinite, ferrihydrite and the clay fraction of an illitic soil (54.9% illite, 17.0% montmorillonite and 24.9% kaolinite) and a montmorillonitic soil (33.9% illite, 55.0% montmorillonite and 11.1% kaolinite) has been determined. Thiazafluron adsorbed on neither kaolinite nor iron oxide. The adsorption isotherms on smectites and illite conformed to the Freundlich equation. Values of Kf-obtained for smectites were larger than for the illite and increased as the layer charge of the smectite decreased. Desorption of thiazafluron on smectites was shown to be highly irreversible. Adsorption isotherms of thiazafluron on different homoionic montmorillonite samples suggest an important role of the exchangeable cations in the adsorption. Infrared spectra and X-ray diffraction analysis of the complexes of thiazafluron with homoionic montmorillonites indicated that thiazafluron adsorbs in the interlamellar space of the smectites, mainly by substitution of water molecules associated with the exchangeable cations through the carbonyl-amide group and formation of H-bonds or waterbridge between the NH group of the amide and the basal oxygens of the montmorillonite. The illitic soil clay adsorbed more of the herbicide than the montmorillonitic one did, suggesting that illite and montmorillonite may be present in soils in altered forms giving rise to different adsorption capacities from those of the pure minerals.

    Notes: Isoxaflutole is a relatively new herbicide used for weed control in maize. The objective of this research was to increase the understanding of the behaviour and environmental fate of isoxaflutole and its diketonitrile (DKN) degradate in soil, including determination of the strength of sorption to soil and whether sorption is affected by ageing. In sandy loam (SL) and silty clay (SiCl) soils, 14C-isoxaflutole was found to dissipate rapidly after application to soil; recovery ranged from ∼42% to 68% at week 0, and recovery had decreased to 〈10% at week 12. Decreases in 14C isoxaflutole residues over time in SL and SiCl soils are consistent with hydrolysis of isoxaflutole and formation of bound DKN residues in the soil. DKN recovery from freshly treated SiCl and SL soils was 41% to 52%. After a 12-week incubation in SL soil at pH 7.1 and 8.0, recoveries were similar, ∼40%. However, at week 12 in SL soil pH 5.7, DKN recovery decreased to ∼28%. DKN recovery in SiCl soil at week 12 was 〈10%. Increases in sorption of DKN in SL at pH 5.7 and SiCl soil over time indicate that the DKN degradate is tightly bound to the soil and sorption is affected by soil pH and soil type. Sorption of 14C-DKN in the SiCl soil more than doubled with ageing compared with the lower Kd sorption coefficient values of the SL soils. In the SiCl soil at time 0, the Kd was 0.6; at 1 week, Kd increased to 2; and at the end of the 12-week incubation period, Kd was 4.5. This strong binding of DKN to the soil may be due to chelate formation in the interlayer of the clay.
