Notes: Summary It has long been known that the stress history of bone tissue influences its structure; however, the nature of this relationship remains largely uncharacterized. The objective of this work was to induce a quantifiable change in the stress history ofin vivo bone tissue and examine subsequent changes in structural and material properties that might occur. Continuous compressive loads were applied to the diaphysis of adult mongrel dogs for 2 months. The loads, ranging from 12–130 N, were superposed on the normal activity of the animals by implanting spring loading devices on the diaphysis of the femur. After the animals were sacrificed, mid-diaphysial specimens were subjected to compression testing to determine a structural bulk stiffness. The cross-sectional areas of original bone tissue and new bone deposition were then determined. The ash weights of selected specimens were also determined. The results indicate that a positive correlation between the increase in cross-sectional area and the superposed stress does exist. The new bone apposition was found almost entirely on the periosteal surface. Very little evidence of internal remodeling or endosteal movement was observed. The new tissue was found to have a lower ash weight and appeared to have a disorganized microstructure. Mechanical testing also suggests that the newly deposited tissue is far less stiff than the mature original bone.

Notes: Summary It is shown that for all physically reasonable boundary conditions employed in the theory of polar fluids the theory predicts the traditional result that a fluid will undergo a pure rigid body rotation when subjected to a steady rotational motion in a cylindrical vessel.

Notes: Summary In this note, a complete solution for a unified system of partial differential equations governing three variations of the theory of thermoelasticity and two variations of poroelasticity theory is presented. The connection between this solution and other known solutions is exhibited.

Notes: Abstract This paper employs invariance arguments to derive an equation relating the kinetic energy density to the densities of linear and angular momentum in a Cosserat continuum. While this relationship may serve to determine one density given the others, such an approach in general suffers from a lack of uniqueness. In particular, it is shown that certain previous proposals for the angular momentum density do not follow uniquely from the derived equation, although they do satisfy invariance requirements. Consequently, the value of the relationship lies in its use as a consistency test upon proposed forms for the different densities. Examples are given for special cases of practical interest which illustrate such applications.

Notes: Summary We discuss some restrictions on boundary conditions in continuum mechanics arising from the requirement that the basic balance laws, invariance conditions and entropy inequality must hold for the material outside of the bounding surface. We illustrate our assertions for polar materials, but the ideas we use are applicable to all continuum theories.

Notes: Summary It is shown that the axial motion and rotational motion in the steady flow of a polar fluid in a rotating cylinder are coupled, and that the rotational motion is not a rigid body rotation. For the same problem in traditional viscous fluid theory the axial motion and rotational motion are uncoupled, and the rotational motion is a rigid body rotation.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of the orthotropic elastic constants of a highly porous material upon the stereological parameters characterizing the anisotropy of the porous microstructure has been considered in two recent papers in this journal. In the first paper [1] dimensional arguments were employed to develop to a relationship between ratios of the orthotropic elastic constants and ratios of the mean intercept lengths for a class of cell wall bending models of highly porous materials. In the second paper [2] the general tensorial form of the relationship between the orthotropic elastic constants and the mean intercept length was described without reference to a specific form or type of porous microstructure. The purpose of this note is to observe that the particular relationships obtained from the class of cell wall bending models used in the first paper are proper special cases of the general relationships given in the second paper.

Notes: Abstract An acoustic wave approach is presented for the measurement of the twenty-one independent elastic constants of the most general linearly elastic anisotropic solid. The method requires that one be able to measure the density of the material, the velocities of the three modes of wave propagation in each of six directions, and the particle displacements associated with each of those modes.
