    Description: Identification of a sediment/basement contact using seismic reflection recordings has proven to be extremely difficult in wide areas of the North Pacific Ocean owing to the presence of massive, highly reflective chert layers within the sediment column. Leg 136 of the Ocean Drilling Program recovered coherent pieces of chert of sufficient size for the first comprehensive laboratory measurements of the seismic properties of this material. Compressional-wave velocities of six samples at 40-MPa confining pressure averaged 5.33 km/s, whereas shear-wave velocities at the same pressure averaged 3.48 km/s. Velocities were independent of porosity, which ranged from 5% to 13%, suggesting that pores within the samples were mostly high aspect ratio vugs as opposed to low aspect ratio cracks. Back-scattered electron images made with a scanning electron microscope confirmed this observation. Acoustic impedances were calculated for the chert samples and from shipboard measurements of the red clay sediment overlying the chert layers. An extremely large compressional-wave reflection coefficient (0.73) characterized the interface between the two lithologies. A synthetic seismogram was calculated using chert and typical pelagic carbonate properties to illustrate the influence of chert layers on a marine seismic-reflection section. Compressional-wave to shear-wave velocity ratios of the chert samples (Vp/Vs =1.53) are close to that of single-crystal quartz in spite of variable porosity. Shear-wave reflection coefficients are estimated to be approximately 0.94. A compressional-wave reflection coefficient for a basement/sediment (carbonate) interface is estimated to be approximately 0.50, significantly less than that of sediment/chert.

    Notes: Abstract The assumption involved in this work is that the formation of monolayer (α) oxide species, which occurs on copper in base at 60 °C at ca. 0.5 V (RHE), is of little relevance to the electrocatalytic behaviour of the metal at low potentials. For many processes occurring at the interface in question the critical potential is ca. −0.1 V (RHE). This is the value where several electrocatalytic oxidation and reduction processes commence or terminate under potential sweep conditions; hydrous oxide films are reduced close to this value and it is possible to produce an active (but transient) state of the metal surface which exhibits a reversible redox response in this region. The results are rationalized in terms of the incipient hydrous oxide/adatom mediator model of electrocatalysis, and the nature of the active site material at the interface is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract In the presence of spin-orbit interaction, in addition to the well-known weak-field coupling scheme for cubic complexes in which the ligand field perturbation is applied last, we show that it is possible to devise a second weak-field coupling scheme in which the spin-orbit perturbation is applied last by constructing the corresponding energy matrices for d 2,8 electronic configurations. We also show that for the parameters applicable to actual experimental systems, the new weak-field coupling scheme yields purer eigenfunctions than the well-known weak-field coupling scheme.

    Notes: Abstract A key issue confronting our newer suburbs is the stance they should take towards efforts at regional cooperation and coordination of major policy areas. This article analyzes the preferences on this issue held by residents in a rapid growth suburb in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Through factor analysis, four identifiable dimensions of regionalist preferences were obtained from questionnaire responses--administrative cooperation, land-use cooperation, mass transit cooperation, and regional basic services cooperation. Correlational analyses between these dimensions of regionalist preferences and selected community status characteristics, social situation characteristics, and local political participation status of respondents reveal no systematic covariation. Thus municipal policies which influence the population mix within a community with respect to the life situation characteristics measured in this study are not likely to be useful instruments for influencing the preferences, pro or con, of the community towards regionalist policies. Further, local political participants are found to be representative of the larger community's regionalist policy preferences.

    Notes: Abstract A problem in the use of ocean bottom seismometers is the difficulty in leveling the sensors while ensuring good coupling to the seafloor. We have investigated the coupling characteristics of the seismic sensors in the new ONR ocean bottom seismometer. In the deployable sensor package for that instrument, a three-component seismometer set is suspended on a 2-axis passive leveling gimbal and is immersed in a viscous fluid. We report tests, conducted in a seismic vault, comparing the output of a gimbaled seismometer set to that of a set rigidly coupled to the ground. Our results show that the degree to which the gimbaled set is coupled to ground motion is a function of the viscosity of the coupling fluid. The coherence between the two sensor sets is poor (〈0.4) at some frequencies within the band of interest (0.15 to 20 Hz) and on some components when the viscosity of the coupling fluid is comparatively low (14 Pa-s or 0.16 kSt kinematic viscosity). In addition, the outputs of some components over portions of this frequency band are attenuated and are phase-shifted relative to the outputs of the set rigidly coupled to the ground. Coherence and phase response similarity improve as the viscosity of the coupling fluid is increased. With a coupling fluid viscosity of 980 Pa-s (10 kSt), coherence and phase agreement between the two sensor sets is good (〉0.9) across nearly the entire band of interest on all three components. A simple analytical model of the gimbaled seismometer set as a damped, driven, compound-pendulum provides a basis for understanding the test results.

    Notes: The n-alkyl α-cyanoacrylates from methyl through n-octyl exhibit a reverse order of polymerization rate on biological substrates compared to that on water. On water, the lower homologs spread and polymerize rapidly, whereas the higher homologs spread but polymerize slowly. On biological substrates, the lower homologs do not spread or spread slightly and the higher homologs exhibit large spreadabilities and very rapid polymerization rates. Determination of the spreading coefficients for these systems by using the monomers or model compounds confirm the observed spreadabilities. It is proposed that the increased rate of polymerization of the higher homologs on biological substrates may be due to increased catalyst concentrations on these surfaces or to the solubilization of the higher homologs at the interface, making the catalyst sites more available to the monomer. The suggestion is made that if the liquid monomers spread and orient on the substrate and subsequently polymerize, the polymers will maintain the orientation. If such is the case, a technique is available for preparing stereospecific vinyl polymers which may have different spatial configurations depending on the polarity of the liquid substrate upon which they have been allowed to spread and polymerize.
