    Description: The X-22A V/STOL Flight Research Facility which provides in-flight simulation capability applicable to hover, low speed, and transition flight investigation of fixed wing V/STOL flying is described. The variable stability system, the guidance and display equipment, the data acquisition and processing system, and the ground simulator are included. Research programs involving the STOL flying qualities for landing approach, the control system, display, and guidance requirements for VTOL aircraft instrument approach and landing, and the expansion of the adverse weather operation capabilities of the Navy's VTOL aircraft are briefly summarized.

    On the feasibility of closed-loop control of intra-aortic balloon pumping (1973)

    Description: A closed-loop control scheme for the control of intra-aortic balloon pumping has been developed and tested in dog experiments. A performance index reflecting the general objectives of balloon-assist pumping is developed and a modified steepest ascent control algorithm is utilized for the selection of a proper operating point for the balloon during its pumping cycle. This paper attempts to indicate the feasibility of closed-loop control of balloon pumping, and particularly its flexibility in achieving both diastolic augmentation of mean aortic pressure and control of the level of end-diastolic pressure (EDP) an important factor in reducing heart work.
