    Description: The lithosphere of the Moon has been deformed by tectonic processes for at least 4 billion years, resulting in a variety of tectonic surface features. Extensional large lunar graben formed during an early phase of net thermal expansion before 3.6 Ga. With the emplacement of mare basalts at ∼3.9–4.0 Ga, faulting and folding of the mare basalts initiated, and wrinkle ridges formed. Lunar wrinkle ridges exclusively occur within the lunar Maria and are thought to be the result of superisostatic loading by dense mare basalts. Since 3.6 Ga, the Moon is in a thermal state of net contraction, which led to the global formation of small lobate thrust faults called lobate scarps. Hence, lunar tectonism recorded changes in the global and regional stress fields and is therefore an important archive for the thermal evolution of the Moon. Here, we mapped tectonic features in the non‐mascon basin Mare Tranquillitatis and classified these features according to their respective erosional states. This classification aims to provide new insights into the timing of lunar tectonism and the associated stress fields. We found a wide time range of tectonic activity, ranging from ancient to recent (3.8 Ga to 〈50 Ma). Early wrinkle ridge formation seems to be closely related to subsidence and flexure. For the recent and ongoing growth of wrinkle ridges and lobate scarps, global contraction with a combination of recession stresses and diurnal tidal stresses, as well as with a combination of South Pole‐Aitken ejecta loading and true polar wander are likely.

Lunar wrinkle ridges only occur within the lunar Maria. It has been argued that their formation is linked to the subsidence of the dense mare basalts, which would have happened in the early history of the Moon. We mapped all of these features within a dark lunar region called Mare Tranquillitatis and then studied their morphology on high‐resolution images. Based on their morphology, we found a wide time range of tectonic activity, ranging from ancient to recent. Large wrinkle ridges seem to be ancient and influenced by subsidence. Smaller wrinkle ridges and lobate scarps show signs of recent activity. They likely formed recently within the last hundred million years because of the Moon's current state of global compression.

    Notes: Electron drift velocities in mixtures of SiF4 and Ar have been measured using a pulsed-Townsend type drift tube. A set of vibrational excitation cross sections of electron scattering in SiF4 has been subsequently determined by the swarm analyses of measured transport data in highly dilute SiF4−Ar mixtures. The derived cross sections are consistent with the electron transport properties over an order of magnitude in SiF4 concentration in gas mixtures, thus providing evidence that the main features of their near threshold behavior, and of their absolute magnitude have been captured. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements of transient diffusion phenomena are reported for a “high-reactivity”, 20% open-pore volume (OPV), nuclear graphite, in the virgin state and after thermal oxidation in air or radiolytic oxidation in a carbon dioxide/carbon monoxide/methane coolant mixture. The volume of restricted access pores (RAPs) in this graphite is small (〈 5% of the OPV) and the changes in pore structure with oxidation are in general very similar for thermal and radiolytic oxidation. A significant difference is that the RAP volume decreased (as expected) on slow thermal oxidation, but showed a slight increase during radiolytic oxidation. This is consistent with a model in which the methane is severely depleted in RAPs, which are therefore subject to an effectively uninhibited corrosion.

Un conditionnement avec plastique stratifié a mieux dispersé le triène que la présentation en capsules de polyéthylène. Comme dans le cas des autres produits examinés précédemment, ce triène a interrompu l'attraction sexuelle (réduction du nombre de mâles capturés dans les pièges, réduction du nombre d'accouplements) de A. transitella dans les vergers d'amandiers, pendant moins longtemps que l'aldéhyde. Placé dans des pièges contenant des femelles vierges, il est efficace comme l'aldehyde pendant 5 semaines, pendant 3 semaines lorsqu'il est placé autour des pièges et pendant 13 jours quand il est utilisé dans des parcelles de 9 arbres. Des essais ultérieurs avec d'autres présentations et des quantités plus élevées de triène devraient montrer si ce produit peut être utilisé pour l'interruption des accouplements. Les analogues de phéromones ont généralement une plus grande stabilité et un coût de synthèse moins élevé que les aldéhydes.
    Notes: Abstract A novel olefinic analog, Z,Z-1,12,14-heptadecatriene, was synthesized from Z,Z-11,13-hexadecadienal, a major pheromone component of the navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and evaluated as a potential disruptant of mating communication in commercial almond orchards. The effectiveness of the triene as a disruptant was compared to that of the aldehyde by evaluating the reduction in captures of feral males in female-baited traps and the reduction in mating success for females. The triene was highly effective in bringing about reductions in male captures in traps in all tests relative to controls. This effectiveness lasted as long as 5 weeks in one test and was influenced by type of dispenser, release rate and proximity of dispensers to female-baited traps. In none of the tests did the triene outperform the aldehyde in reducing male captures. The results of mating success tests showed the triene to be ineffective relative to controls (26% reduction) while the aldehyde yielded 100% reductions in matings during a 6-day period.

    Notes: Abstract Steady-state and transient gas diffusion measurements are reported for two series of specimens of AGR moderator graphite. One series had been oxidized radiolytically in a coolant atmosphere in the BFB experiments at Grenoble; the other series had been oxidized thermally in air at ∼ 425° C. The evolution of pore structure with oxidation is followed for each series, and in particular, the changes in restricted-access pore (RAP) volume are determined. The results, together with previous data, indicate that thermal oxidation of the gilsocarbon graphite leads to a rapid increase in RAP volume due to the opening up of closed pores. In contrast, radiolytic oxidation leads to a relatively slow growth in RAP volume due mainly to the oxidation of existing RAPs in which the coolant's methane inhibitor is substantially depleted.
