Abstract Comparative microstrain measurements of the elastic deformation of tibia compact bone sections taken from 1-, 3- and 12-month-old rabbits, revealed an increase in the elastic modulus from 15.1 to 27.6 GN m−2 with age. This result was correlated with observations of the porosity and hydroxyapatite percentages of the compact bone and the implications for a collagen/hydroxyapatite composite were examined.
