    Notes: The governing equations for the transitional fluid motion and pit contour induced by the laser marking and the thermocapillary are derived. The rate of thickness change is controlled by two factors: the surface tension force and the gravitation force; the former is much more important than the latter. The temperature rise in a thin optical layer is calculated based on the Poynting vector theorem. Calculated results indicate that the temperature profile follows a Gaussian distribution, and is in agreement with previous reports. Mathematical modeling shows that the rate of pit formation is strongly related to the surface tension, melt viscosity, layer thickness, and optical properties of the recording layer. The effects of the marking conditions, substrates, and convectional heat transfer on pit contour are also determined. In addition, the limitations of this model are discussed in detail.

    Notes: We have determined the surface energies (γs) of two liquid crystalline polyesters (Vectra™ A-950 [Hoechst Celanese, NJ] and Xydar™ [Amoco, GA]) and one polyesteramide (Vectra™ B-950 [Hoechst Celanese, NJ]) using contact angle techniques at room temperature. These LCPs were dissolved in bis-trifluoromethyl phenol and spin coated upon glass slides to form thin films. The contact angle measurements were carried out employing a Ramé-Hart Contact Angle Goniometer (Ramé-Hart, NJ). Pure water, glycerol, formamide, and diiodomethane were chosen as the testing liquids. Various surface energy calculation models were utilized to analyze the surface energies of these LCP films. Experimental data suggest that surface energy values did match between two-liquid geometric and three-liquid acid-base approaches if the correct combinations of testing liquid were used. However, the three-liquid Lifshitz-van der Waals acid-base method is more suitable for the surface energy calculation of these three LCPs, and provides much more information (e.g., acidity and basity of LCP surfaces). The average surface energies of Vectra™ A-950, Vectra™ B-950, and Xydar™ are 41.0, 41.9, and 42.3 mJ/cm2, respectively. In addition, all these three LCPs should be classed as monopolar Lewis bases because their Lewis acid components, γ+, are negligible. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. B Polym.     Notes: By using the Lifshitz-Van der Waals-Acid-Base theory, we have determined the surface tensions (γs) of three commercially available liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) from the measurement of contact angles on thin films. The values obtained are 43.1, 41.1 and 41.5 mJ/m2 (dyn/cm) for Vectra™ A-950, Vectra™ B-950 and Xydar™ SRT-900, respectively. Experimental data suggest that all the three LCPs are monopolar. The strength of Lewis base (tendency to donate a pair of electrons for the formation of a covalent bond) for these three LCPs is as follows: Vectra™ B-950 〉 Xydar™ SRT-900 〉 Vectra™ A-950. We also theoretically estimated γs from both parachor (Ps) and cohesive energy (Ecoh) utilizing the concept of molecular group contribution. It was found that γs's calculated from Hoftyzer & Van Krevelen and Hayes' Ecoh values are close to our experimental results obtained from contact angle measurements. This is especially true for Xydar™ SRT-900 LCP, where γs obtained from contact angle measurements is 41.5 mJ/m2, while from Hoftyzer and Van Krevelen, and Hayes it is 42.4 and 41.8 mJ/m2, respectively. However, more adequate group contributions for naphthalene and amide groups are urgently needed.
