    Notes: Selection for good chipping clones in potato breeding often takes place during the middle and late selection stages. This is due to the considerable resources needed for the assessment of several characteristics. Objective multivariate methods for the elimination of redundant variables were applied to eight standardized chipping quality traits recorded on advanced clones over 15 years at two locations in New Brunswick, Canada. The clones were evaluated of specific gravity and the following chipping scores: direct from the field in August; after 10 days storage at 13 °C; from 4 °C storage in February; from 4 °C storage in February with 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks and 4 weeks reconditioning at 16 °C. Five elimination methods produced a similar deletion order. In every subset obtained, specific gravity and direct chipping from the field were always retained. Reconditioning treatments from one to four weeks after cold storage were shown to be the most redundant. The reduction in the number of traits from eight to four by every technique could recover more than 80 % of the original variation, showing that redundant variables were effectively discarded.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to identifiy the endophytic bacteria recovered from the foliage, tap roots and nodules of red clover plants (Trifolium pratense L.); and to assess the effects of the nodule bacteria, alone and in combination with Rhizobium spp., on the growth and development of red clover seedlings. Thirty-one bacteria species from 14 different genera were recovered from within the foliage, roots and nodules of red clover plants cv. AC Charlie. Genera diversity and species number were greatest in foliage tissues. Pantoea agglomerans (59.6%) was the most frequent species recovered in foliage tissues, Agrobacterium rhizogenes A in the tap root (49.2%) and Rhizobium leguminosarum BV phaseoli and R. loti B in the nodules (27.2% each). Recovery of Rhizobium species was not restricted to the nodules, and species of this genus were systemic throughout the plant. Clover root nodules were host to 12 bacteria species other than rhizobia, of which 8 were specific to this tissue. Using non-selective media, R. leguminosarum BV trifolii constituted only 8.8% of all the root nodule bacteria recovered. In root bacterization experiments, species of nodule bacteria promoted growth of red clover more often when applied in combination with R. leguminosarum BV trifolii than when applied singly. However, Bacillus megaterium, Bordetella avium and Curtobacterium luteum consistently promoted growth either individually or in combination with R. leguminosarum BV trifolii. Nodulation was promoted when R. leguminosarum BV trifolii was coinoculated with Bacillus insolitus, B. brevis or A. rhizogenes A. Single isolate applications of Rhizobium species to roots always led to the depression of clover growth, but mixtures of R. leguminosarum BV trifolii and R. leguminosarum BV phaseoli resulted in growth promotion. The latter is considered further evidence of the beneficial allelopathic side effect of strain competition for the same ecological niche.

    Notes: Abstract Cell suspensions derived from young petioles of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) were cultured in the presence and absence of aVerticillium albo-atrum culture filtrate (20% v/v) for 6 cycles. The frequency of somatic embryogenesis and the growth rate of the suspension cultures were investigated at each cycle. Somatic embryogenesis in the filtrate-treated cultures declined but was still at a relatively high level after 6 subcultures, compared to controls cultures which virtually lost the capacity for embryo formation in the same period. The decline in the embryogenic capacity of filtrate treated-cultures was accompanied by a six-fold increase in the rate of growth of the cultures.

    Notes: Abstract The necessity of incorporating societal and environmental concerns into publicly funded agricultural initiatives in research, extension, and practice is increasingly evident. Agriculturalists are urged to acknowledge and respond to societal concerns before an insensitive and largely ill-informed urban majority assumes a dominant posture in agricultural policy. In recent history, the availability of unrealistically cheap energy encouraged the evolution of a form of commercial agriculture unfettered by sound ecological principles. At present, external, resource-intensive intervention of increasing magnitude is needed to compensate for the apparent ecological instability generated by practices such as intensive cereal management or conservation tillage practices. Polarization of the enterprises of plant and animal agriculture to enable centralized, concentrate-intensive, confinement feeding has disrupted the natural cycling of nutrients and carbon in the soil, encouraged the withdrawal of perennial forages from crop rotations, and invoked a widely ramifying network of agricultural and societal problems. Solutions to these problems must evolve from a holistic and far-reaching appraisal of causes, rather than from a piecemeal approach to individual symptoms.

    Notes: Summary Inbreeding depression is often observed in potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.). The influence of four types of genetic divergence on the vigour and variability of the progenies was studied in two field experiments. The measures of genetic divergence were 1) the progenies' inbreeding coefficients (F); 2) The Mahalanobis distances between the parents obtained from their agronomic traits (A); 3) the parental GCA effects (G); 4) quantitative measurements of proteins and esterases separated by PAGE (M). These four measures of divergence were not significantly related. The inbreeding coefficient was the only parameter which had significant simple correlations with total yield, total tuber number, SCA effects for total yield or the standardized generalized variance. Canonical correlation analyses between the divergence parameters and vigour-related traits produced significant relationships in one experiment only. Progeny with high inbreeding coefficient values (0.06–0.12) gave below average yield. It is suggested that an inbreeding coefficient should not exceed 0.08. None of the methods of estimating genetic divergence appears to be a good predictor of either the mean or the variability of a progeny.

    Notes: Summary Quantitative variability for seed yield and six other characters was analysed in Lotus corniculatus L. cv. Leo. The material consisted of 144 polycross progenies and 100 parents. Wide variability existed for all characters. The characters with the greatest variability were seed yield, forage grading and plant height. The polycross progeny test was employed to study the general combining ability of the parents. Highly significant differences existed for all seven characters under study. Parent-offspring genotypic and phenotypic correlations were high and significant for all characters except genotypic correlations for seed yield and seeds per pod. High h2 values (broad sense) were obtained for seed size and days to flowering. Traits with moderate to high h2 were seed yield (71% in parents, 64% in progenies), plant height, forage grading, and seeds per pod. The character pods per inflorescence had the lowest h2.     Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to correlate flowering response of tetraploid red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) in the year of seeding with winter survival and other characteristics (vigour, bloom date). In two different years about 2000 plants of two different cultivars (Hungaropoly and Tapiopoly) were established and in the fall were classified into five growth types based on rosette formation and flower production. Non-flowering types were shorter and had few petioles at 6–8 weeks of age, but showed better survival than flowering types. Hungaropoly non-flowering types were more vigorous and bloomed earlier in the second year but Tapiopoly non-flowering types were less vigorous and bloomed later. Although non-flowering in the seeding year was associated with better survival in the second year, there was adequate variation within both types for selection for improved persistence.
