Abstract:
Notes:
Summary The effect of the zonal wind, having a constant angular velocity, upon the periods of an incompressible and homogeneous fluid, and upon an autobarotropic atmosphere is studied. The effect is found to be small for the roots of the first class, and larger for the roots of the second class. In the autobarotropic case, the equivalent depth of the atmosphere, which is independent of the lapse rates of the autobarotropic layers when the zonal wind is not present, is found to depend also on the lapse rate of the lowest layer when the zonal wind is present. The effect due to this lapse rate on the periods of the first class, when the zonal wind is held at a certain reasonable speed, is found to be similar to that due to the zonal wind itself. The effect on the positive period of the first class wave, that resembles the solar semidiurnal wave, due to the zonal wind or to the lapse rate is small and within the range of the tuning required by the resonance theory. Thus the resonance theory is further strengthened by this study.
