Abstract A new version of the photopyroelectric (PPE) method that uses optically opaque and thermally thick sample and transducer is proposed as a sensitive technique for phase transition detection. The primary value of this technique is that the exponential dependence of the PPE voltage on the specimen specific heat in the thermally thick limit, allows a convenient amplification of the effects of the phase transition on the signal. Large anomalies of the PPE voltage in the critical region were obtained for two ferroelectric crystals (seignette salt and TGS).
