Notes: Summary The paper presents two torsion solutions, based on method of images, for an equilateral triangular prism: (i) when the prism contains a central longitudinal hole, and (ii) when the prism contains three equal longitudinal holes situated symmetrically in two different ways. The two solutions differ from each other in their formulation. Numerical examples are given in each solution.

Notes: Summary This paper presents a direct solution for the stresses in an infinite strip containing a rigid circular inclusion located at any position within the strip. The solution is applicable to any stress system even with respect to the cross axis of symmetry of the strip. The strip is regarded in a state of generalized plane stress. Numerical examples are shown corresponding to a certain given size and location of the inclusion. Both the cases of longitudinal tension and transverse bending are considered. The parametric coefficients involved in each case are determined. The hoop-stress in the strip at the surface of inclusion as well as the normal stress along the cross axis of symmetry of the strip are evaluated.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the stresses in a sphere under a pair of concentrated forces acting axisymmetrically inside the sphere are solved by using a Love's stress function. The method of solution is also applied to solve the problem of a pair of ring forces acting axisymmetrically inside the sphere. In either problem, the solution covers the limiting case in which the pair of forces or ring forces is acting on the sphere.

Notes: Summary The paper presents an analytic solution for the stresses in a thick plate of infinite size containing a spherical inclusion or cavity eccentrically located between the surfaces. The plate is subject to a stress system symmetrical about the axis of revolution of the plate while the surfaces are stress-free. In the inclusion problem, the inclusion is assumed to be rigid and no slip occurs between the plate, and inclusion. In the cavity problem, the surface of cavity is assumed to be stress-free. The solutions of both problems are illustrated by numerical examples for the cases of all-round tension and circular bending. Part I of the paper presents the solution of the cavity problem.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the problem of a rectangular plate under general self-equilibrant edge tractions is solved by the method of images. The edge tractions are decomposed into four systems. When the boundary conditions in each system are satisfied, the solution is reduced to a set of linear equations, which can be solved by the method of successive approximations. Finally, the solution is illustrated by numerical examples. The effect of truncation of the set of equations is also investigated.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a solution for the stresses in a perforated circular ring containing a ring of uniformly distributed circular holes. The stress function is constructed by using ring-periodic biharmonic functions. Even and odd solutions are formulated separately. The solution is illustrated by numerical examples of a ring containing six holes under two types of loading.
