Abstract: This book summarizes the current knowledge of anthocyanins, provides systematic information for future exploration of anthocyanin applications. It focuses on several aspects regarding the studying progression in the field of anthocyanins. The first section of the book provides a brief introduction to the scope and progress on anthocyanins, which is followed by the second section that describes the natural sources, structure, extraction approaches, bioavailability, and current stabilizing approach of anthocyanins. Then in the third part, the book focuses on the industrial processing of anthocyanins in foods by discussing the impact of food processing on anthocyanin structure and composition as well as classical processing techniques on anthocyanin-containing foods, including high-pressure, encapsulation, microwave, and combined application of the above techniques. In the last section of the book, the authors explore the currently most popular application of anthocyanins in improving human health, such as the effect of anthocyanin on vision, metabolism, neural system, cardiovascular system, and cancers. The book will facilitate readers’ understanding of the progress of anthocyanin studies. And it will benefit researchers and graduate students in the fields of natural products, functional food, and nutrition, etc. .

Description: An analysis of eight microsatellite loci in 90 individuals was performed to define the genetic structure and variability of three estuarine populations of Coilia mystus: 30 individuals each collected from ChangJiang River (Yangtze River) estuary-CJ, MinJiang River estuary-MJ, and ZhuJiang River (Pearl River) estuary-ZJ. The results showed polymorphic information contents (PIC) of 0.78, 0.77, and 0.64 in CJ, MJ, and ZJ, respectively. The mean observed number of alleles (Na) ranged from 7.38 to 11.88. The mean observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.09 to 0.21 and from 0.68 to 0.81, respectively. The ZJ population was least polymorphic. Highly significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, mostly due to deficits of heterozygote, were found in these three populations. Pairwise FST and Reynolds’ distance indicated that the three estuarine populations were genetically distinct, in accordance with the principal component analysis (PCA) and the Bayesian model-based clustering algorithm analysis. The results showed that pairwise genetic differentiation among these three estuarine populations were relatively high, with possible divergence to subspecies level. This study provides microsatellite DNA evidence for assessing the genetic distinctness of C. mystus populations and will benefit fishery resource management and sustainable utilization of C. mystus.

Notes: Abstract. Based on a complexity analysis of mutual information transmission of EEG developed by us [Xu J, Liu Z, Liu R, Yang Q (1997) Physica D 106: 363–374], dynamic processes of the complexity of mutual information transmission in human brains were studied. To diminish possible problems due to coarse graining preprocessing, some new measures of complexity were used. The results show that, just before and after generalized seizures, the complexities of almost all information transmission between different brain areas drop significantly; there is also a temporary decrease of complexity when subjects shift their attention. The above facts suggest that there is a transient decrease of information transmission complexity when brain state changes occur suddenly. Mental arithmetic tasks activate the left temporal lobe to exchange more information with other brain areas. The results hint that the methods used here might be an approach to observe quick processes in the living brain.

Notes: The constant flux blanking plug is a downhole flow control device used in the separatelayer water injection system of oil-field, its flow characteristic and reliability are the most importantmatters that people care about. So these performances of the constant flux blanking plug areanalyzed by numerical methods here. The dynamic model of the constant flux blanking plug isestablished by bond-graph, then the simulation is made by the 20-SIM software. The influence oflocal flow field is studied by CFD (computational fluid dynamics), with which some different valvespools and pockets are compared. The discrete particles’ trajectories are analyzed by the Lagrangianmethod, and the particle erosion rates of different materials are calculated with Bitter’s erosionmodel. All the simulation data show that the structure and material have great influence on the flowcontrol precision and reliability which need to improve at present. The simulation results areverified through ground or field tests in the end

Notes: We present a model of export rivalry in vertically related markets where a DC firm produces a high-quality good as well as a key input utilized by an LDC firm to produce a low-quality export good. the DC firm acts as a Stackelberg leader by setting the price of the input and the quantity of its export good. We show that the DC firm's decision on vertical supply depends on the cost, demand, and quality parameters of both producers, and that the LDC government should tax either its final good exports or its key input imports.

Notes: High efficiency has been achieved in polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) exhibiting red emission by doping a fluorescence host material, poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK), with an iridium(III) complex, bis[2-(2′-benzothienyl)-pyridinato-N,C3′]iridium(acetylacetonate) (BtpIr). The electroluminescence spectrum has a maximum wavelength of 614 nm. The highest external quantum efficiency is 3.3%. Due to its short triplet excited lifetime (∼5 μs), the quenching of the triplet exciton in BtpIr-doped PVK PLEDs has been shown to be suppressed compared to platinum(II)-2,8,12,17-tetraethyl- 3,7,13,18-tetramethylporphyrin-doped PVK PLEDs. 65% of the peak efficiency can be sustained at high-current density and at the very high brightness of 1350 cd/m2. We suggest that both triplet–triplet annihilation and polaron–triplet annihilation involves exciton quenching. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The degradation mechanism of phosphorescent-dye-doped polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) is investigated. The active medium of our PLED is a polymer blend comprising poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK), [2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butyl-phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole] (t-PBD), and platinum(II)-2,8,12,17-tetraethyl-3,7,13,18-tetramethylporphyrin (PtOX). The cyclic voltammetry result shows that the reductive reversibility of PtOX is poor. This result suggests that PLED doped with PtOX is not stable if PtOXs trap electrons and turn into anionic PtOX species. This was indeed verified by fabricating single-layer PLEDs with various amounts of electron-transporting material, t-PBD. A slower degradation rate was observed from the devices with higher concentration of t-PBD, because of the reduction of the electron accumulation at the PtOX sites. The half decay lifetime of our phosphorescent polymer LED has been improved by a factor of ∼40, from 1.2 to 45 h. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
