Notes: The change of the lattice parameter with temperature (82–320 K) of the single phase Y1Ba2Cu3O9−x superconductor has been investigated by x-ray diffractometer. The experimental result shows that there exist two abrupt changes of lattice parameter at about 250 and 125 K separately in the curve of the lattice parameter versus temperature. But no change of structure symmetry was observed as shown by x-ray diffraction. The abrupt change of lattice parameter at about 250 and 125 K may be associated to the position adjusting of oxygen atoms in oxide ceramic.

Notes: Abstract Among the painters handling polyurethane varnish in two furniture manufacturing factories with high toluene diisocyanate (TDI) exposure (0.79 mg/m3 and 0.31 mg/m3), 26.3% and 15% subjects, respectively displayed asthmatic symptoms, lung function loss, and an increment in mast cell degranulation percentage specific to TDI. Some cases of TDI-linked contact dermatitis were also found among them, being elucidated by positive patch testing to TDI. However, the previous abnormalities could not be verified among the painters from another factory with TDI concentration below the TLV of it (0.11 mg/m3). It was concluded that both pulmonary hypersensitivity and contact sensitization to TDI had occurred in some of the painters included in this study, and that the immunologic effects of TDI was concentration dependent.

Notes: Abstract ATM switch, the core technology of an ATM networking system, is one of the major products in Fujitsu telecommunication business. However, current gate–level design methodology can no longer satisfy its stringent time–to–market requirement. It becomes necessary to exploit high–level methodology to specify and synthesize the design at an abstraction level higher than logic gates. This paper presents our prototyping experience on domain–specific high–level modeling and synthesis for Fujitsu ATM switch design. We propose a high–level design methodology using VHDL, where ATM switch architectural features are considered during behavior modeling, and a high–level synthesis compiler, MEBS, is prototyped to synthesize the behavior model down to a gate–level implementation. Since the specific ATM switch architecture is incorporated into both modeling and synthesis phases, a high–quality design is efficiently derived. The synthesis results shows that given the design constraints, the proposed high–level design methodology can produce a gate–level implementation by MEBS with about 15 percent area reduction in shorter design cycle when compared with manual design.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer effect was applied to study the electronic configuration of the complex of crystal violet and ferric chloride. Combined with the results of XPS, IR, and X-ray diffraction, we conclude that after mixed with iron metal compound the lone pair electron of nitrogen atom in the crystal violet was transferred into the outer orbit of Fe3+ ion, and the compound which is analogous to the donor-acceptor complex formed.

Notes: J774A.1 immortalized macrophage tumor cells display several phenotypes and functional capacities similar to that of murine peritoneal exudate macrophages (PEM). Both populations display comparable number of M-CSF receptors. Yet the number of GM-CSF receptors on J774A.1 cells is only one-fourth that of PEM (1,500 vs. 6,000 per cell). Unlike J774A.1 cells, which constitutively express c-myc transcripts, normal PEM required rMuGM-CSF for the induction of c-myc expression. Nevertheless, the growth of J774A.1 cells can be further enhanced in the presence of exogenous rMuGM-CSF, rHuM-CSF, and rMulL-3. Treatment with either rMulL-3 (20 ng/ml) and rHuTGF-β1 (1.0 ng/ml) for 24 hr at 37°C, markedly enhanced the expression of GM-CSF receptors on normal PEM but not leukemic J774A.1 cells. J774A.1 cells also did not respond by autologous upregulation of GM-CSF receptors as seen in PEM following treatment with rMuGM-CSF. Treatment with either pertussis toxin (20-100 ng/ml) or H-8 (50 μM) for 24 hr led to an enhanced expression of GM-CSF receptors on J774A.1 cells in a time-and dose-dependent manner but did not result in enhanced receptor expression on normal PEM. These findings suggest that the expression of GM-CSF receptors may be regulated by mechanisms involving Gi-and their downstream elements, which in turn are linked to regulatory pathways of other cytokine receptors. In J774A.1 cells, such regulatory interaction may not exist. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: We recently derived a series of transformed cell lines by transfecting mouse bone marrow cells highly enriched for macrophage progenitors with a newly described human gene, R-myc, which has homology to the c-myc oncogene. In this report, we show that these lines share some features characteristic of cells of the mononuclear phagocyte lineage. Specifically, all cell lines had macrophage-or monocytelike morphology, contained nonspecific esterase, were phagocytic for latex beads, secreted lysozyme, bore the Mac-1 antigen, and contained a minority of cells with Fc receptors. However, only a single monocytelike clone had appreciable numbers of cells which bore complement receptor 1, and none were phagocytic for antibody or complementcoated particles, or constitutively secreted Interleukin-1. All these cell lines secreted a growth factor capable of supporting the in vitro proliferation of bone marrow macrophages. Radiommunoassay and receptor binding studies indicate that this factor is colony stimulating factor 1.

Notes: The effect of purified, recombinant murine gamma interferon (IFN-γ) on the regulation of macrophage proliferation induced by colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF-1) was investigated. Although both hemopoietic stem cells (GM-CFC) and tissue-derived peritoneal exudate macrophages (PEM) proliferated in response to CSF-1, the more mature PEM were much more sensitive to an antiproliferative effect of IFN-γ. The role of IFN-γ receptor expression and its relationship to growth inhibition was examined. Bone marrow cells as a whole did not exhibit an appreciable amount of IFN-γ receptor binding activity. Likewise, nonadherent (NA) cells derived from CSF-1-stimulated bone marrow cultures displayed low levels of IFN-γ receptor binding activity. On the contrary, more mature adherent (AD) cells (monocytes/macrophages) from the same culture exhibited high levels of IFN-γ receptor binding activity which continued to increase with culture time. The elevated IFN-γ binding activity is due to an increase in total receptor number rather than the binding affinity as judged by Scatchard analysis. Similar to the relationship between PEM and GM-CFC, more mature AD cells were also more susceptible to the inhibitory effect of IFN-γ on CSF-1-induced proliferation than their less mature NA counterparts. The fact that the sensitivity to IFN-γ correlated well with the expression of existing IFN-γ receptors strongly suggests that the inhibitory effect is mediated through IFN-γ receptors. This study shows that the expression of IFN-γ receptors in mononuclear phagocytes may not only represent one of the phenotypic parameters acquired by the growing macrophages during the process of differentiation, but may play some role in controlling proliferation.

Notes: L-cell colony-stimulating factor (CSF-1) is a sialoglycoprotein of molecular weight 70,000 daltons that specifically stimulates macrophage colony formation by single committed cells from normal mouse bone marrow and by various classes of more differentiated tissue-derived mononuclear phagocyte colony-forming cells (Stanley et al., 1978). CSF-1 interacts with target cells by direct and specific binding to membrane receptors (CSF-1 receptors) that are present only on cells of the mononuclear phagocyte series and their precursors. We studied the effect of tumor-promoting phorbol esters on the binding of 125I-labeled CSF-1 (125-CSF-1) to murine peritoneal exudate macrophages (PEM). Biologically active TPA (12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate) inhibits the binding of 125I-CSF-1 to its receptor on PEM. This inhibition exhibits temperature, time, and concentration dependence. At 37°C, maximum inhibition occurred at about 10-7 M; inhibition was 50% at 5 × 10-9 M. At 0°C, the inhibitory activity of TPA is diminished. The action of TPA on PEM is transient. Treated cells recover their 125I-CSF-1-binding activity whether TPA is later removed or not. The process of recovering CSF-1-binding activity is completely blocked by the addition of cycloheximide. When several phorbol derivatives were tested for their inhibitory activities, only biologically active phorbol esters were found to possess such activities. Furthermore, the inhibitory activities of various phorbol esters are proportional to their tumor-promoting activities. Inhibition appears to be due to a reduction in the total number of available CSF-1 receptors rather than a decrease in receptor affinity.
