    Notes: An analysis of electronic polarizabilities, interionic potentials, and equilibrium geometries for 20 alkali–halide dimers such as Na2Cl2 is presented. The electronic polarizabilities of ions in dimers have been calculated by taking account of the electrostatic potential due to neighboring ions within the Seitz–Ruffa energy level analysis. The polarizabilities thus obtained for dimers are then used to evaluate the magnitudes of polarization energies and van der Waals dipole–dipole energies. For describing the overlap repulsive potential we have adopted two forms: (i) the revised version of the Born–Mayer potential and (ii) the Harrison form for the overlap repulsive energy. These potentials have been used to obtain the binding energies of monomers as well as dimers, spectroscopic constants of monomers, equilibrium geometries of dimers, and dimerization energies. The results have been discussed and compared with available experimental data.

    Notes: Wheat-barley addition lines 7H, 2H, 3H, 4H, 6H and 5H having barley chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7, respectively, were evaluated for resistance to karnal bunt (Neovossia indica) using syringe inoculation of sporidial suspensions of N. indica under glasshouse conditions. Addition lines 4H and 7H were rated as highly resistant and resistant, respectively, with zero and 3.22 coefficients of infection compared to ‘Chinese Spring’ which had a 23.5 coefficient of infection. All the six addition lines were found to be susceptible to specific virulences of Puccinia recondita tritici and P. striiformis.

    Notes: Abstract Shoot buds of ginger were successfully encapsulated in 4% sodium alginate gel. Encapsulated buds were germinated in vitro to form roots and shoots. In vitro germination (emergence of sprouts) of encapsulated buds ranged from 16.7% to 81.8% on different media after 5 weeks of incubation. Normal plantlets with an average shoot length of 2.3 cm and 1.7 cm root length were successfully transplanted into unsterilized soil without any hardening process. These plantlets showed no symptoms of ginger yellows disease and the causal fungal pathogen failed to grow out on culture media (used as a diagnostic test).

    Notes: Abstract Wheat spikelets detached from the spike at anthesis were cultured on solidified media and successfully produced mature grains. These grains resembled normal grains and contained well-developed, embryos. Lower concentrations of glutamine favored dry weight increase in developing grains. Such grains were indistinguishable from grains from greenhouse-grown plants in germination on moist blotting sheets. The technique of individual spikelet culture can be used to study physiology and development of wheat grains and kernels and to study host-pathogen interactions in wheat floret diseases such as Karnal bunt.

    Notes: Chemical etching of poly(ethylene terephthalate) filaments with aqueous methylamine has revealed a complex stress - cracking behavior, which varied with orientation and thermal crystallization conditions. The appearance of both longitudinal and transverse cracks, can be explained on the basis of the existence of two types of domains, where the stresses are preferentially concentrated. They are explained on the basis of Prevorsek's structural model. In heat-set fibers, there exists a skin to core differentiation in the internal stress distribution. The crack pattern also varied depending on whether the fibers were heat-set in the taut or slack conditions. This chemical etching technique can prove to be a very useful tool, for the study of the internal stress distribution induced in fibers by various fabrication processes or post mechanical deformations.

    Notes: The effect of sulfur mustard (SM), a well-known chemical warfare agent on the microhardness of two poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films was investigated at different loads. SM induces hardness in PET films, perhaps due to an antiplasticizing effect. Heat treatment of the films enhanced their microhardness. The heat-set films show a further increase in their microhardness after exposure to SM. These results were supported by physicochemical techniques like plasma and amine etching, which revealed complex etching phenomena giving rise to a structure-specific pattern. The film having a higher weight loss due to plasma and amine etching showed lower microhardness. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
