    Variable source and age of different forms of carbon released from natural peatland pipes (2012)

    Description: We used the carbon isotope composition (14C and δ13C) to measure the source and age of DOC, POC, dissolved CO2 and CH4 (δ13C only) released from three natural peat pipes and the downstream catchment outlet of a small peatland in northern England. Sampling under different hydrological extremes (high flows associated with storm events and low flows before or after storms) was used to explore variability in C sources as flow paths change over short periods of time. The δ13C composition of organic C differed (δ13C-DOC −28.6‰ to −27.6‰; δ13C-POC −28.1‰ to −26.1‰) from that of the dissolved gases (δ13C-CO2 −20.5‰ to +1.1‰; δ13C-CH4 −67.7‰ to −42.0‰) and showed that C leaving the catchment was a mixture of shallow/deep pipe and non-pipe sources. The isotopic composition of the dissolved gases was more variable than DOC and POC, with individual pipes either showing 13C enrichment or depletion during a storm event. The 14C age of DOC was consistently modern at all sites; POC varied from modern to 653 years BP and evasion CO2 from modern to 996 years BP. Differences in the isotopic composition of evasion CO2 at pipe outlets do not explain the variability in δ13C and 14C at the catchment outlet and suggest that overland flow is likely to be an important source of CO2. Our results also show that the sources of CO2 and CH4 are significantly more variable and dynamic than DOC and POC and that natural pipes vent old, deep peat CO2 and POC (but not DOC) to the atmosphere.

    Lower Cambrian halkieriids and other coeloscleritophorans from Aksu-Wushi, Xinjiang, China (1997)

    Description: Halkieriids are known largely from isolated sclerites, although it is understood that originally they formed the scleritomes of slug-like animals in Lower Cambrian benthic environments. The Yurtus Formation (?Tommotian–Atdabanian equivalent) of the Aksu-Wushi area, west Xinjiang, China, has yielded abundant sclerites. These are secondarily phosphatized, but show considerable detail. The sclerites can be divided into three classes: cultrates, long palmates, and short palmates; definite siculates have not been recognized. In some samples elongate to semicircular shells co-occur with the sclerites; these may derive from the same halkieriid scleritome. The external surface of the shells may bear a subdued ornamentation. The concave interior, however, is remarkable on account of a unique structure consisting of a group of nodular-like units. These may be arranged in a low cone or dispersed in a small circle. In addition to the sclerites of halkieriids and their possibly associated shells, rarer material is attributable to the related group of siphogonuchitids.

    Lower Cambrian coeloscleritophorans (Ninella, Siphogonuchites) from Xinjiang and Shaanxi, China (1996)

    Description: Ninella tarimensis from the Lower Cambrian Yurtus Formation of western Xinjiang, China, is shown to be a relative of the halkieriids and siphogonuchitids. These are known principally from dispersed sclerites, presumably secreted by slug-like organisms that were an abundant component of the Cambrian benthos. The sclerites of N. tarimensis are relatively small, strongly recurved and usually possess an upper surface ornamented with transverse sculpture. The lower surface is more or less smooth and is joined to the upper surface via steep faces that may be grooved. The apertural region is quadrate in outline and bears a circular foramen. Ninella is fairly widespread and is known from elsewhere in China (Guizhou and Shaanxi Provinces) and from Kazakhstan. A brief description of the siphogonuchitid scleritome is also presented, based on dispersed sclerites and shells from the Lower Cambrian of Shaanxi Province, China. Formal synonymy of the sciotaxa Siphogonuchites, Dabashanites, Lopochites, and Maikhanella as Siphogonuchites is proposed.

    Description: SummaryA reinterpretation is attempted of the 25 years of graptolite ultrastructural work based upon the present state of knowledge. It is emphasized that studies need to embrace many more species of graptolites, particularly in the dichograptid groups, and with different growth stages, before the gross evolution of ultrastructural elements can be satisfactorily appraised. The factual (morphological, ultrastructural) data are themselves reappraised, summarized, and very tentatively related to Bulman's anagenetic grades of graptolite development.
