Notes: [Auszug] Interactive feedback mechanisms constitute the greatest uncertainty in projecting future climate change associated with increasing greenhouse gases. The change can be either amplified (positive feedback) or reduced (negative feedback). One mechanism, involving water ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN 1861, Tyndall1 described the 'green-house' effect caused by atmospheric water vapour, pointing out that water vapour transmits a large fraction of the incident solar radiation but strongly absorbs infrared radiation emitted by the Earth's surface. More than a century later Moller2 suggested that ...

Notes: [Auszug] Sagan and Mullen4 suggested that the solution must lie in a more efficient atmospheric greenhouse effect on Earth during the period when the solar luminosity was low. To increase the greenhouse effect, it is necessary to change the atmospheric composition, or density, or both. Sagan and Mullen4 ...

Notes: Abstract Suggestions have persisted over the past few years that, contary to conventional estimates, increasing levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide will produce negligible warming of the earth's surface, or might even result in surface cooling. In the present paper we reexamine several aspects of these suggestions and illustrate that they are either founded in various violations of the first law of thermodynamics, or that they are based upon misinterpretations of historical data.

Notes: Abstract It has recently been suggested that following a nuclear exchange there might be a significant reduction in surface temperature over land areas, due to the impact upon the radiation budget of the surface-atmosphere system of smoke produced by fires and of dust injected into the stratosphere by ground bursts. The present study addresses several aspects of this possible radiative perturbation, such as the unusual nature of the climate response to the perturbation, a description of differences which are inherent within existing model studies, an evaluation of radiative transfer assumptions which have been employed in existing model studies, and illustrative latitudinal and diurnal variability of the smoke-dust impact upon solar radiation.
