Notes: This paper is devoted to the discussion of certain nonequilibrium states of gases and vapors in the free-molecular regime. In spite of the presence of temperature differences and, in some cases, of evaporation and condensation processes, the gas is shown to remain at rest. The case of a vapor in a tube of condensed phase, for which some numerical solutions are also given, is treated in some detail.

Notes: In this paper a kinetic model describing a relativistic gas is considered. The collision frequency is assumed to depend upon the particle speed in a way suggested in a previous paper by the authors. The new model has more satisfactory properties than one previously studied. Several results of both analytic and numerical character concerning the sound and heat waves with frequencies comparable to the intermolecular collision frequency are given.

Notes: The structure of a shock wave propagating through a hard-sphere gas is obtained by the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC), in the limit of infinitely large Mach number. The shock profiles and the distribution function of molecular velocities f are compared with Grad's and Mott–Smith approximations. It is shown that the "regular" part of f, exhibits a singularity in the velocity space at the location of the upstream bulk speed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The problem of a two-dimensional binary gaseous mixture slit flow is investigated on the basis of numerical calculations of the linearized kinetic model proposed by McCormack [Phys. Fluids 16, 2095 (1973)]. The mass flow rate and the field flow of both components are calculated for several Knudsen numbers between 10 and 0.1. Kinetic coefficients satisfying Onsager's reciprocity relations are found.

Notes: This Brief Communication is devoted to a discussion of Orlov's extension of the Mott-Smith method to study the propagation of a shock wave in a moderately dense hard sphere gas. It is shown that, at least in the present form, the method is not compatible with the conservation of momentum and energy. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The equilibrium temperature in free-molecular flow can be lower than the stagnation temperature, i.e. the recovery factor smaller than one, if two distinct accommodation coefficients are assumed for the tangential and the normal translational energy of the molecules. Moreover the equilibrium temperature turns out to be dependent on a parameter which is a function of these accommodation coefficients and therefore is related to the physical nature of the surface and of the gas. The connection of this theory with a gas-surface interaction model previously proposed by the authors is shown.

Notes: Abstract The dispersion relation for waves propagating in a gas according to kinetic theory is studied. Collisions are described by means of the model proposed by Bhatnagar, Gross and Krook (BGK). New numerical results for shear and thermal waves are given. The high frequency behaviour of the solutions obtained through analytic continuation of the dispersion relation is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The transition flow of a gas between two reservoirs through a two-dimensional slot is studied. The width of the slot is much smaller than the length but finite. The ratio of the equilibrium number densities in the reservoirs is near 1 and the equilibrium temperatures are the same. Galerkin's method of solution is applied to the linearized BGK equation and the total mass flow is evaluated as a function of the inverse Knudsen number δ and the length-to-half width ratioL. Limits δ≫ 1, δ≪1 andL≫ 1 are investigated and good agreement with other authors is found. Simple analytical expressions are obtained for these cases.
