Notes: The hollow-sphere model, with temperature-dependent viscoplastic material response, is used to investigate thermal effects in shock compaction of metal powders. Model calculations show very good agreement with experimental shock rise times only if the temperature dependence is considered. The results also suggest that the dynamic compaction may be qualitatively different depending on whether viscoplastic or inertial effects dominate the pore collapse process.

Notes: Abstract A time-sinusoidal circularly polarized plane standing wave solution is obtained for isotropic lossless dielectric media with arbitrary nonlinearity. The spatial variation of the standing wave depends on the nonlinearity and is found by solving a problem of centralforce motion in which the electric complementary energy density furnishes the potential and the spatial coordinate has the role of time. Two special nonlinear dielectric response laws-cubic and quintic-are treated, and explicit solutions for the spatial variation of the wave amplitude and phase are obtained in terms of elliptic functions and elliptic integrals, respectively. The standing-wave solution is applied to give steady state solutions of two reflection/transmission problems (a) reflection from, or resonance modes between, ideally conducting planes and (b) reflection and transmission at a plane interface between two nonlinear dielectric media.

Notes: Abstract A finite oscillatory shearing motion is shown to be possible, in the absence of body force, in every homogeneous isotropic compressible or incompressible elastic solid. The spatial geometry is the same for all materials and the nature of the time-dependence, for a particular material, is determined by the generalized shear modulus. A motion of this type and a spatially uniform, time-dependent temperature can be supported in thermoelastic solids, without application of body force or volume supply of heat.

Notes: Abstract Motions of a certain type are shown to be possible in every compressible or incompressible, homogeneous, isotropic simple material, in the absence of body force. These motions have a specific spatial dependence and the nature of the time dependence, for a particular material, is determined by the material response function or functional for the shear stress in simple shear. It is shown further that motions of this type, and spatially homogeneous, time dependent temperatures, can be supported without application of body force or radiative supply of heat.

Notes: Abstract Within the scope of the nonlinear theory of an elastic Cosserat surface, this paper is mainly concerned with the influence of the reference geometry and the related aspects of material symmetry restriction on the response of thermoelastic shells. The significance of the effect of the reference geometry is discussed in the case of isotropic shells, which may be of variable thickness in a reference state.

Notes: Abstract A plane standing wave solution is obtained for homogeneous, isotropic, incompressible nonlinearly elastic solids. The motion describes the nonlinear interaction of two oppositely propagating, circularly polarized waves. It is used to obtain exact steady state solutions for nonlinear vibrations of a plate and for reflection and transmission of finite amplitude, circularly polarized waves at a plane interface.

Notes: Abstract For an important class of incompressible isotropic elastic solids, the response function for the extra stress is a (tensor-valued) function of scalar type. It is shown here that the stress response for compressible isotropic elastic solids cannot be of scalar type.
