    Notes: Abstract The IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals is an important conservation tool, but the accuracy of predictions about risks of global extinction within 10 years or three generations is difficult to test objectively. In this study, we compare IUCN predictions with the results of attempts to derive realistic scenarios that could lead to the global extinction of six species of long-lived reptiles. For three species, the IUCN predictions matched real events reasonably well but still overestimated risks of global extinction. For the other species, the predictions did not match real events. Reasons why disparities occur are discussed.

    Description: De las siete especies de tortugas marinas del mundo, cinco habitan en aguas territoriales de Cuba. Existen seis especies conocidas de la región del Caribe (Tabla A1.1). Algunas anidan y se alimentan regularmente en aguas cubanas (Chelonia mydas, Caretta caretta y Eretmochelys imbricata), mientras que otras se encuentran rara vez (Dermochelys coriacea y Lepidochelys olivacea) (Tabla A1.1).
    Description: Of the seven species of world sea turtles, five inhabit Cuban territorial waters. There are six species known from the Carribean region (Table A1.1). Some nest and feed regularly in Cuban waters (Chelonia mydas, Caretta caretta y Eretmochelys imbricata), whereas others are encountered rarely (Dermochelys coriacea y Lepidochelys olivacea) (Tabla A1.1).

    Description: Se presenta el análisis de la información obtenida a partir del muestreo en cada una de las zonas durante las capturas históricas de E. imbricata en Cuba. Si bien algunas veces resultan incompletos, ofrecen nuevas ideas sobre los impactos de las capturas sobre la composición por tallas, así como en la proporción por sexo de la población capturada. Los resultados son importantes para cualquier evaluación que se efectúe de los probables impactos en la tan reducida captura que tiene lugar en la actualidad.
    Description: The sampling data taken from each Zone during the historical harvest of E. imbricata in Cuba, although sometimes incomplete, provide insights into the impacts of harvesting on the size structure and sex ratio of the population harvested. The results are important to any assessment of the likely impacts of the much reduced traditional harvest now in place.

    Description: La proposición de Cuba para el rancheo de E. imbricata ha sido y continuará siendo una vía cautelosa basada en la experimentación objetiva. Estudios piloto han establecido de forma inequívoca que las crías de E. imbricata de huevos silvestres pueden desarrollarse en cautiverio hasta alcanzar la talla comercial. Dichos estudios han indicado también una serie de variables que afectan la supervivencia, el crecimiento y la eficiencia de producción, todo lo cual está sujeto a investigaciones actuales.
    Description: Cuba´s approach to ranching E. imbricata has and will continue to be a cautions one based on objective experimentation. Pilot studies have established unequivocally that hatchling E. imbricata from wild eggs can be raised in captivity to commercial size. They have also indicated range of variables that affect survival, growth and the efficiency of production, all of which are the subject of ongoing research.
