Description: A simple way to estimate accumulated exposure time over the celestial sphere for a scanning telescope in earth orbit is described. Primary constraints on observation time, such as earth blockage, solar occultation, and passage through the South Atlantic Anomaly, are modeled using relatively straightforward, mainly closed-form geometrical solutions. The resulting algorithm is implemented on a desktop microcomputer. Though not rigorously precise, the algorithm is sufficient for conducting preliminary mission design studies for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE).

Description: The Voyager attitude and articulation control system is designed for a three-axis stabilized spacecraft; it uses a biasable sun sensor and a Canopus Star Tracker (CST) for celestial control, as well as a dry inertial reference unit, comprised of three dual-axis dry gryos, for inertial control. A series of complex maneuvers was required during the first of two Voyager spacecraft encounters with Saturn (November 13, 1980); these maneuvers involved rotating the spacecraft simultaneously about two or three axes while maintaining accurate pointing of the scan platform. Titan and Saturn earth occulation experiments and a ring scattering experiment are described. Target motion compensation and the effects of celestial sensor interference are also considered. Failure of the CST, which required an extensive reevaluation of the star reference and attitude control mode strategy, is discussed. Results analyzed thus far show that the system performed with high accuracy, gathering data deeper into Saturn's atmosphere than on any previous planetary encounter.

Notes: Abstract Second-harmonic generation and spectroscopic absorption measurements were made to study the non-linear optical and stability properties of guest/host polycarbonate thin films in which the guest chromophores were oriented by corona poling. Optimum poling conditions were achieved at temperatures less than the glass-rubber transition temperatures. Stabilized order parameters as high as 0.23 and retention of orientational order as high as 86% were found. Stable, resonance-enhanced, values of the non-linear optical coefficient d 33, for the fundamental of 1.064 Μm, were as high as 31 pm V−1. This value is over four times that predicted by a simple thermodynamic model for isotropic materials. Hydrogen bonding between the guest and polycarbonate is proposed to account for the high d 33 coefficients and long-term stability of the films.

Notes: Abstract We report on the photorefractive properties of a stable polymeric material based on the host polymer, poly(N-vinylcarbazole). Two-beam coupling and four-wave mixing experiments were used to measure the performance of devices constructed by sandwiching the material, composed of host, plasticizer, photo-sensitizer, and non-linear optical chromophore, between transparent electrodes. A steady-state diffraction efficiency of 60% and a two-beam coupling gain of 22 cm−1 in excess of the absorption of 4 cm−1 were observed at the laser's operating wavelength of 670 nm. The devices are easily prepared and have lifetimes in excess of one year with no indication of degradation when stored at ambient temperatures.

Notes: Abstract Spectroscopic absorption measurements were used to study the non-linear optical thin-film properties of an azo dye-attached polymer in which the dye chromophores were oriented by corona poling. Details of the polymer synthesis, poling configuration and poling procedure are presented. A rigid oriented gas model was used to describe the poled polymer. The stabilized order parameter of 0.51 found is, to the authors' knowledge, larger than any reported for guest-host or chromophore-attached polymeric systems.
