Chemical shifts are reported for the heterocyclic ring hydrogen of a series of para-substituted 4-aryl-1,2,3-selenadiazoles and substituent effects are evaluated statistically by means of the Swain-Lupton multiple correlation analysis. A satisfactory understanding of the various substituent effects is obtained by this approach. Excellent correlations were obtained for a number of varying aliphatic solvents, no serious hindrances to correlation being encountered. An approach was also made towards an understanding of aliphatic- and aromatic-induced solvent shifts, as far as these are modified by substituents.
