Notes: Abstract We have studied the metazoan parasite fauna of 52 species of deep-living benthic fishes from depths of 53 to 5000m off the New York Bight (39–49°N; 70–72°W). 17144 parasites were recovered from 1712 fishes. The infestation rate was 80%, with an average of 12.5 worms per host. Percentage occurrence by group among all fishes was Monogenea 12.9%, Digenea 48%, Cestoda 22.1%, Nematoda 54.5%, Acanthocephala 3.8%, and Copepoda 4.5%. Differing composition of the parasite fauna in different fish species reflects differences in diet. Specialized feeders are rather distinct; generalized feeders, which predominate, show overlaps in parasite fauna. In individual species, changes in diet with growth are reflected in changes in the parasite fauna. Infestation rate is directly related to abundance of the free-living fauna; hence, fish from within the submarine canyon are more heavily infested than those living without. Although it contains fewer families and genera than shallow faunas, the deep-sea parasite fauna is not extremely unusual in terms of its abundance, diversity, or host specificity. At the greatest depths, parasite abundance and diversity dramatically decline.

Notes: An ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) surface analysis chamber coupled with a high pressure cell (HPC) is described. The UHV chamber has been designed using an octagonal format to utilize several surface analytical techniques. In addition, the single-level surface analysis chamber design allows simple access to the HPC for carrying out kinetic studies at elevated pressures ((approximately-greater-than)1 atmosphere) with in situ transfer from the UHV chamber. The UHV-compatible HPC has been designed to facilitate the exchange of the sample or repair of the sample holder while maintaining the analysis chamber at UHV conditions.

Notes: Abstract Urinalysis was conducted on six volunteer workers involved in mixing and loading 2,4-D ester solutions into aircraft and in guiding the spray aircraft in two conifer release programs during 1981 and 1982. Exposures were reduced by wearing a full line of protective clothing. Two females and one male were involved in mixing the spray for 109 aircraft loads over an 11-day period in 1981. During the 1981 operation, the highest daily excretion of 2,4-D in the urine was 0.30, 0.94 and 9.59 μg/kg body weight for the three workers. In 1982, three male workers were involved, one diluting the concentrated solution and loading the aircraft, and two marking the swaths for aerial application over an 18 day period. The highest daily excretion of 2,4-D in the urine was 7.73, 8.37, 22.2 μg/kg body weight for the three workers. One of the authors, acting as a bystander, was directly sprayed in the 1982 season and 0.44% was absorbed based on urine analysis. The highest daily excretion of 2,4-D in his urine was 4.75 μg/kg body weight. For all seven people, the calculated exposure was less than the no-effect level of 10 mg/kg of body weight/day by a large margin of safety. The presence of 2,4-D in urine samples in the pre-spray period and its slow disappearance during the post spray period prompted further investigation. Swabs of internal surfaces of living quarters revealed deposits of 2,4-D from 0.7 to 288 μg/0.1m2 and on spray equipment from 0.7 to 184 μg/0.1m2.

Notes: Abstract The genus Dasyrhynchus Pintner is revised. The adult of D. pacificus Robinson, 1965 is described from the sharks Carcharhinus brachyurus, C. obscurus, C. plumbeus, Notorhynchyus cepedianus and Sphyrna lewini from Australia, as well as from Scyliorhinus haeckeli, C. limbatus and Sphyrna sp. from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Bigener brownii is recorded as a new teleost intermediate host from South Australia. D. talismani Dollfus is reported for the first time from Australian waters, in C. brachyurus and new records of the species are also given for Carcharhinus sp. from South Georgia, and for an unidentified species of shark from the Gold Coast, Ghana, Africa. D. variouncinatus (Pintner) is reported for the first time from Australia, in C. amblyrhynchus, and in C. falciformis from Hawaii; it appears to be limited to the Pacific Ocean. D. giganteus (Diesing) is reported from C. leucas and Negaprion brevirostris from Florida, Rhizoprionodon (?) terraenovae from Zaire and Sphyrna sp. from Dakar, all from the Atlantic Ocean. Strobilar characters, namely the distribution of testes and the positions of the osmoregulatory canals, distinguish D. giganteus from D. variouncinatus whereas oncotaxy provides no distinguishing features. D. magnus (Bilqees & Kurshid, 1985) n. comb., formerly Pseudogilquinia magna, is reported from Sphyrna mokarran from Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, and its plerocercus from the teleost Lutjanus johni from Queensland, Australia. The species is allocated provisionally to Dasyrhynchus pending a more complete description of the adult. D. indicus Chandra & Rao, 1986 is considered a species inquirenda. D. pillersi (Southwell, 1929) is transferred to the genus Grillotia as G. pillersi n. comb.

Notes: Abstract Diesingium lomentaceum (Diesing, 1850) Pintner, 1929 is redescribed from specimens from Mustelus mustelus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Senegal, Africa, and the genus rehabilitated. Mustelicola Dollfus, 1969 is considered a synonym of Diesingium Pintner, 1929, and D. lomentaceum is considered very similar to D. woodsholei (Dollfus, 1969) n. comb. D. antarcticus (Campbell & Beveridge, 1988) n. comb. is regarded as a valid species. The redefinition of the family Mustelicolidae Dollfus, 1969 sensu Campbell & Beveridge (1988) includes the features of Diesingium.

Notes: Abstract Chimaerarhynchus rougetae n. g., n. sp. is described fromSqualus acanthias andCentrophorus sp. from the coast of Senegal, and differs from all other trypanorhynch genera in having a chainette composed of dissimilar elements, that is, double-winged hooks alternating with pairs of hooks each with a single lateral wing. The new genus is allocated to the Gymnorhynchidae Dollfus, 1935.Patellobothrium quinquecatenatum n.g., n. sp. is described from the spiral intestine ofSphyrna mokarran from Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia and plerocerci fromRachycentron canadus from Queensland, Australia. The genus is distinguished from all others in possessing five chainettes. It is allocated to the family Mustelicolidae Dollfus, 1969. The relationships of all genera of trypanorhynchs possessing chainettes are discussed, and they are divided into three groups: (1) Dasyrhynchidae Dollfus, 1935, Lacistorhynchidae Guiart, 1927, Mustelicolidae and Hornelliellidae Yamaguti, 1954 are considered closely related since all genera possess two bothridia, a hermaphroditic duct and have hollow hooks; (2) Gymnorhynchidae, amended to contain onlyGymnorhynchus Rudolphi, 1819 andChimaerarhynchus n.g., is distinct in possessing four bothridia, an accessory seminal vesicle and hollow hooks; (3) Mixodigmatidae Dailey & Vogelbein, 1982, amended to includeMixodigma Dailey & Vogelbein, 1982 andHalysiorhynchus Pintner, 1913 has four bothridia, lacks seminal vesicles and a hermaphroditic duct and has solid hooks. A new family Molicolidae n. fam. is erected forMolicola Dollfus, 1935 andStragulorhynchus Beveridge & Campbell, 1988. The new family has a poeciloacanthous armature, and is distinguished by possessing a band of hooks on the external surface of the tentacle, four sessile bothridia and an acessory seminal vesicle.Myrmillorhynchus Bilqees, 1980 is suppressed as a synonym ofPterobothrium Diesing, 1850.Neogymnorhynchus Bilquees & Shah, 1982, is suppressed as a synonym ofPterobothrium, with the type species,N. platycephali becoming a synonym ofP. heteracanthum Diesing, 1850.Eulacistorhynchus Subhapradha, 1957 is considered agenus inquirendum;Gymnorhynchus cymbiumi Chincholikar & Shinde, 1977 is also a synonym ofPterobothrium heteracanthum Diesing, 1850.
