Notes: Abstract The Doppler broadened lineshape is measured as a function of temperature for iron and vanadium; vacancies produce a strong trapping effect in γ-Fe, but a weak effect in V. Threshold temperaturesT t for trapping are 1280±25 and 1370±30 K. Empirical linear relationships betweenT t , self-diffusion energyQ SD and monovacancy formation energyH 1v F are discussed and used to determineH 1v F values for γ-Fe and V.

Notes: To test the hypothesis that variation in soil respiration is related to plant production across a diverse forested landscape, we compared annual soil respiration rates with net primary production and the subsequent allocation of carbon to various ecosystem pools, including leaves, fine roots, forests floor, and mineral soil for 36 independent plots arranged as three replicates of four age classes in three climatically distinct forest types.Across all plots, annual soil respiration was not correlated with aboveground net primary production (R2=0.06, P〉0.1) but it was moderately correlated with belowground net primary production (R2=0.46, P〈0.001). Despite the wide range in temperature and precipitation regimes experienced by these forests, all exhibited similar soil respiration per unit live fine root biomass, with about 5 g of carbon respired each year per 1 g of fine root carbon (R2=0.45, P〈0.001). Annual soil respiration was only weakly correlated with dead carbon pools such as forest floor and mineral soil carbon (R2=0.14 and 0.12, respectively). Trends between soil respiration, production, and root mass among age classes within forest type were inconsistent and do not always reflect cross-site trends. These results are consistent with a growing appreciation that soil respiration is strongly influenced by the supply of carbohydrates to roots and the rhizosphere, and that some regional patterns of soil respiration may depend more on belowground carbon allocation than the abiotic constraints imposed on subsequent metabolism.

Notes: Conclusions With recently available portable equipment one can effect considerable improvement in detection limits for lead in painted surfaces. Our unit is admittedly less convenient and more expensive than the currently used NaI(Tl) units, but its excellent sensitivity should provide motivation for further miniaturisation. The visual display of the X-ray energy spectrum eliminates errors due to drift and to substrate variations since the operator can make his own decisions as to definition of background. The most important point is that the device operates accurately and linearly well below the 1 mg/cm2 level which appears to be the practical lower limit of present devices. Comparison of lead levels with legally set limits as low as 0.03 mg/cm2 is feasible.

Notes: Abstract The total conversion coefficient of the 6.2 keV Mössbauer transition in181Ta was measured by X- and gamma-ray spectroscopy. The result of 86 ± 20 disagrees with the literature value of 46, but agrees with theory if a nuclear penetration parameter deduced from relative conversion electron intensities is taken into account. The weak 6.2 keV gamma ray has intensity per decay that is less than the previous value by a factor of 8.5.

Notes: Abstract Conversion electron spectra from threeE3 and fourM4 transitions in103Rh,109Ag,115In,125Te,134Cs,135Ba,193Ir have been measured with the (π/2)√13 iron-free spectrometer with momentum resolution 0.5×10−3 to 1×10−3. Intensity ratios ofL, M, N, O conversion electrons show no significant departures from theory, but there is some evidence of error in the absolute values of outer-shell conversion coefficients calculated by the approximate method of Dragounet al.

Notes: Abstract The monovacancy formation energy of Co is measured as 1.91 eV from a trapping model analysis of theT-dependence of the lineshape parameter. Previously discussed linear relationships between trapping threshold temperature and monovacancy parameters are refined; these relationships can now be regarded as well-established.

Notes: Abstract The activation energy for self-diffusion in chromium is found to be 3.51±0.13 eV from positron trapping measurements. The 4.51 eV activation energy seen in tracer diffusion work is therefore ascribed to divacancies, theQ 2/Q 1 ratio being typical of the bcc refractory group. The positron data give 0.55 for the ratioH 1v M /H 1v F of vacancy migration and formation energies, in agreement with quenching data for tungsten.

Notes: Abstract Errors caused by instrumental instabilities in annihilation photon energy spectrometers can be much larger than statistical errors. The performance of a typical spectrometer is investigated in detail and both empirical and theoretical approaches to correcting data for residual fluctuations are examined.
