    Description: During arc-continent collision, buoyant sections of sediments and rifted continental crust from a subducting plate will accrete to the forearc of the upper plate as long as this backstop remains intact. Deformation of the oceanic arc and forearc block may ultimately lead to accretion of these mafic rock units to the new orogen. The Taiwan mountain belt, which formed at ~6.5 Ma by oblique convergence between the Eurasian passive margin and the overriding Luzon arc in northern Taiwan, offers important insight in this process, since the collision is more advanced in the north than in the south. The incipient stage of arc-collision can be studied in southern Taiwan, while the northern portion of the orogen is presently undergoing collapse due to a flip in the subduction polarity between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. In this study, we seismically image the structure of the northern section of the mountain belt with a tomographic inversion. We present marine and land-based seismic refraction data, as well as local earthquake data, from transect T6 of the Taiwan Integrated Geodynamic Research (TAIGER) program across the Taiwan mountain belt and the adjacent Ryukyu arc. Our 2-D compressional seismic velocity model for this transect, which is based on a tomographic inversion of 10 213 P -wave arrival times, shows that the Eurasian crystalline continental crust thickens from ~24 km in the Taiwan Strait to ~40 km beneath the eastern Central Range of Taiwan. The detailed seismic velocity structure of the Taiwan mountain belt shows vertical continuity in the upper 15 km, which suggests that rocks are exhumed to the surface here from the middle crust in a near-vertical path. The continental crust of the westernmost Ryukyu arc is almost as thick (~40 km) as in the adjacent northern Central Range of Taiwan, and it appears to override the leading edge of the Philippine Sea Plate offshore northeastern Taiwan. If we assume that the western Ryukyu arc crust also thickened in the collision, then the mountain belt is wider and less thick in northern Taiwan than in central Taiwan (~50 km), which may be the result of post-collisional extension in the north.

    Description: Recent advances in wearable electronics combined with wireless communications are essential to the realization of medical applications through health monitoring technologies. For example, a smart contact lens, which is capable of monitoring the physiological information of the eye and tear fluid, could provide real-time, noninvasive medical diagnostics. However, previous reports concerning the smart contact lens have indicated that opaque and brittle components have been used to enable the operation of the electronic device, and this could block the user’s vision and potentially damage the eye. In addition, the use of expensive and bulky equipment to measure signals from the contact lens sensors could interfere with the user’s external activities. Thus, we report an unconventional approach for the fabrication of a soft, smart contact lens in which glucose sensors, wireless power transfer circuits, and display pixels to visualize sensing signals in real time are fully integrated using transparent and stretchable nanostructures. The integration of this display into the smart lens eliminates the need for additional, bulky measurement equipment. This soft, smart contact lens can be transparent, providing a clear view by matching the refractive indices of its locally patterned areas. The resulting soft, smart contact lens provides real-time, wireless operation, and there are in vivo tests to monitor the glucose concentration in tears (suitable for determining the fasting glucose level in the tears of diabetic patients) and, simultaneously, to provide sensing results through the contact lens display.

    Description: The aim of the current study is to explore the effectiveness of using inquiry instruction to support high school students’ learning of seismology. A total of 191 Taiwanese high school students were recruited and assigned to the guided-inquiry condition or the structured-inquiry condition. Students’ learning outcomes (i.e., basic knowledge of seismology, applications of basic knowledge, and attitudes toward seismology) were assessed. The results revealed that the guided-inquiry group outperformed the structured-inquiry group in the application of basic knowledge. In contrast, the structured-inquiry group had a better understanding of basic seismological information. Both groups’ attitudes toward seismology were improved after the inquiry activities. The findings suggest that both guided and structured inquiries are effective in enhancing students’ learning of seismology, albeit in different ways. Accordingly, teachers should be flexible in using different approaches to inquiry activity to maximize students’ learning.

    Description: The main purpose of this study is to analyse striated micro-faults and other types of fractures (including tensile and shear joints, and veins), in order to elucidate their relationships with regional folds and thrusts and regional tectonic stress. We take the fold-thrust belt (i.e., the foothills and the Hsuehshan range) in NW Taiwan as a case study, which is a product of the Plio-Pleistocene arc-continent collision. A total of about 760 and 1700 faults and other fractures, respectively, were collected at 41 sites in the field. We have identified four sets of bed-perpendicular joints in the study area. The observation of joints and bedding at each site indicates that most of the penetrative joint sets developed in the earlier tectonic stage of the pre-folding/pre-tilting event, illustrating the fact that the intersection of joint sets lies along the line perpendicular to the bedding plane. We thus interpret these sets as tectonic fractures under deep-seated tectonic stress. We used the regional fold axes as reference to define the four fracture sets. However, we found that complexity in the study area makes this rather tentative. Principal stress axes 1, 2, 3, were calculated by means of inversion of fault slip data at each site. The ratio that defines the shape of stress ellipsoid is generally small, indicating that the value of the maximum principal stress axe 1 is much larger compared to that of 2 and 3, which are approximately equal. The paleostress regime was characterized by a combination of thrust and strike-slip tectonic regimes. Based on their geometric relationships with tilted bedding, we found most of striated micro-faults were strongly related to the regional folding and can be categorized as early-, during, and late-folding stages. We characterized two major directions for the compressive event, oriented N110–120°E and N150–160°E respectively, which provide additional evidence to delineate the debates about paleostress changes in the Taiwan mountain building process.

    Description: The correlation between sub-band gap absorption and the chemical states and electronic and atomic structures of S-hyperdoped Si have been extensively studied, using synchrotron-based x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES) and first-principles calculation. S 2p XPS spectra reveal that the S-hyperdoped Si with the greatest (~87%) sub-band gap absorption contains the highest concentration of S2− (monosulfide) species. Annealing S-hyperdoped Si reduces the sub-band gap absorptance and the concentration of S2− species, but significantly increases the concentration of larger S clusters [polysulfides (Sn2−, n 〉 2)]. The Si K-edge XANES spectra show that S hyperdoping in Si increases (decreased) the occupied (unoccupied) electronic density of states at/above the conduction-band-minimum. VB-PES spectra evidently reveal that the S-dopants not only form an impurity band deep within the band gap, giving rise to the sub-band gap absorption, but also cause the insulator-to-metal transition in S-hyperdoped Si samples. Based on the experimental results and the calculations by density functional theory, the chemical state of the S species and the formation of the S-dopant states in the band gap of Si are critical in determining the sub-band gap absorptance of hyperdoped Si samples.     Description: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 17 (SCA17) is an autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia caused by the expansion of polyglutamine (polyQ) within the TATA box-binding protein (TBP). Previous studies have shown that polyQ-expanded TBP forms neurotoxic aggregates and alters downstream genes. However, how expanded polyQ tracts affect the function of TBP and the link between dysfunctional TBP and SCA17 is not clearly understood. In this study, we generated novel Drosophila models for SCA17 that recapitulate pathological features such as aggregate formation, mobility defects and premature death. In addition to forming neurotoxic aggregates, we determined that polyQ-expanded TBP reduces its own intrinsic DNA-binding and transcription abilities. Dysfunctional TBP also disrupts normal TBP function. Furthermore, heterozygous dTbp amorph mutant flies exhibited SCA17-like phenotypes and flies expressing polyQ-expanded TBP exhibited enhanced retinal degeneration, suggesting that loss of TBP function may contribute to SCA17 pathogenesis. We further determined that the downregulation of TBP activity enhances retinal degeneration in SCA3 and Huntington's disease fly models, indicating that the deactivation of TBP is likely to play a common role in polyQ-induced neurodegeneration.

    Description: Certain C(30)-steranes have been used for identifying sedimentary rocks and crude oils derived from organic matter deposited in marine environments. Analysis of a C(30)-sterane from Prudhoe Bay oil indicates that these C(30)-steranes are 24-n-propylcholestanes that apparently are derived from precursor sterols 24-n-propylidene-cholesterols and 24-n-propylcholesterol. These widely occurring sterols are biochemically synthesized in modern oceans by members of an order (Sarcinochrysidales) of chrysophyte algae. These data thus imply that C(30)-sterane biomarkers in sedimentary rocks and crude oils have a marine origin.     Description: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with impaired clearance of beta-amyloid (Abeta) from the brain, a process normally facilitated by apolipoprotein E (apoE). ApoE expression is transcriptionally induced through the action of the nuclear receptors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma and liver X receptors in coordination with retinoid X receptors (RXRs). Oral administration of the RXR agonist bexarotene to a mouse model of AD resulted in enhanced clearance of soluble Abeta within hours in an apoE-dependent manner. Abeta plaque area was reduced more than 50% within just 72 hours. Furthermore, bexarotene stimulated the rapid reversal of cognitive, social, and olfactory deficits and improved neural circuit function.
