    Notes: Abstract Bemisia tabaci, that were flown for varying lengths of time (1 min-2.5 h), exhibited behavioral, morphological, and physiological differences. When whiteflies that were engaging in phototactic orientation in a vertical flight chamber were presented with a visual cue simulating their host plant (550-nm narrowband interference filter), 76% landed on this cue within three presentations. Another 18% of the whiteflies displayed an intermittent attraction to the host cue, and 6% displayed a response that, historically, has been considered to be indicative of migration. These individuals failed to respond to the target until they had flown for at least 15 min. These three categories of response were observed in both sexes, in all flight-capable individuals from 1 to 5 days old and in two groups of whiteflies that were exhibiting distinct behaviors prior to our tests (i.e., they were either settled on poinsettia or engaging in phototactic orientation). There was a trend for males that engaged in long-distance flight to have smaller wing dimensions than males that engaged in shorter flights; no trend was evident in female whiteflies. High levels of vitellogenin and vitellin did not inhibit flight activity. In fact, we generally found higher levels of egg proteins in long-distance fliers and in premigratory individuals than in short-duration fliers and settled individuals.

    Notes: Abstract Geocoris punctipes (Say), a predaceous lygaeid not previously docmented as a whitefly predator, was tested in the laboratory as a natural enemy of the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.). Its stalking behavior with whiteflies as prey was similar to that observed with aphids. A previously unobserved behavior was noted that involves the predators using salivary secretions to fasten the wings of prey to various surfaces, allowing labial probing and feeding. Prey consumption as a function of prey number appeared to follow the pattern of the Holling type II functional response. Handling time per prey item ranged from about 180 to 240 seconds. No changes were observed in handling time devoted to earlier versus later catches. Nutritional quality of whiteflies was measured using crude protein, lipids and carbohydrates as criteria. Performance, in terms of predator behavior, total daily handling time, functional response, energy budget and nutritional quality all support the hypothesis that G. punctipes is a promising candidate for biological control of sweet potato whiteflies.

    Notes: Bemisia tabaci exhibited their longest flights between 3 and 5 days following adult eclosion. They rarely engaged in flight when they were 〈 4 hr old and were only capable of short-duration flights after day 7. This difference in flight capacity appears to be associated with changes in the flight musculature and mitochondria. Myofibrils and mitochondria accounted for approximately 50% and 33% of the area within the flight muscles, respectively. These two elements, however, varied with the age and sex of the whitefly. The percentage of the total area occupied by myofibrils was lower in 9-day-old males relative to females and all other age categories. Sarcomere length decreased in older whiteflies, regardless of the sex. Myofibril diameter did not vary with the age of the whitefly, but the diameter of female whitefly myofibrils was greater than the diameter of male whitefly myofibrils. The number of myosin filaments within a myofibril unit increased with age, peaking at 5 days of age for females and 7 days of age for males. In all age groups, females had more myosin filaments than were found in males.Changes in mitochondria and levels of glycogen were related to the observed differences in flight activity. The area occupied by mitochondria was small in 〈 4-h-old and 9-day-old whiteflies, and mitochondrial cristae were undeveloped in newly emerged whiteflies. In 7- and 9-day-old whiteflies the cristae began to separate, leaving visible spaces within the mitochondria. Glycogen granules were abundant in the flight musculature of newly emerged (〈 4-hr-old), 1-day-old and 3-day-old whiteflies, but by 5 days of age only 25% of whiteflies contained glycogen granules. Seven- and 9-day-old whiteflies contained no visible glycogen.An examination of the flight muscle of whiteflies after flights of varying duration (up to 60 min) revealed no relationships between flight duration and the number of mitochondria or the percentage of the total area occupied by mitochondria. There was, however, a positive relationship between flight duration and the percentage of total area occupied by myofibrils. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
