    Description: We present optically-derived estimates of phytoplankton carbon (Cphyto) and chlorophyll a concentration (Chl) across a wide range of productivity and hydrographic regimes in the Subarctic Pacific Ocean. Our high-frequency measurements capture changes in Cphyto and Chl across regional gradients in macro- and micronutrient limitation, and sub-mesoscale hydrographic frontal zones. Throughout the majority of our survey region, carbon to chlorophyll ratios (Cphyto:Chl) ranged between 50-100. Lower values (10-20) were constrained to the highly productive coastal upwelling system along Vancouver Island, whereas higher estimated values (〉200) were found directly off the southern British Columbia continental shelf. Further offshore, Cphyto:Chl was less variable, ranging from 50-80 in high nutrient low Chl (HNLC) waters in June, and from 80-120 in the Gulf of Alaska in July. Much of the variability in Cphyto:Chl throughout the study region could be explained by mixed layer light levels (i.e. photo-acclimation), with additional variability attributed to nutrient-controlled changes in phytoplankton growth rates in some regions. Elevated Cphyto:Chl ratios resulting from apparent nutrient stress were found in areas of low macro-nutrient concentrations. In contrast, iron-limited waters exhibited Cphyto:Chl ratios lower than predicted from the photo-acclimation model. Applying the Carbon-based production model, we derived Cphyto and Chl-based estimates of net primary productivity, which showed good coherence with independent 14C uptake measurements. Our results highlight the utility of ship-board optical data to examine phytoplankton physiological ecology and productivity in surface marine waters.

    Description: Data collected in July, 2016 aboard the R/V Oceanus using an underway flow-through system. For detailed information regarding this system, refer to Burt et al. (2018) and Burt and Tortell (2018). Particulate backscatter (bbp) is presented in two formats. 'Binned' data refers to measurements that have undergone regular processing techniques, namely minute-binning and median filtering. Important metadata, including ships position, salinity, and chlorophyll, are all minute-binned. 'Raw' bbp data refers to measurements not binned or median-filtered, which are higher-resolution (1 Hz, or per-second), and include a number of large 'spikes'. The height of each individual spike ('spikeheight') is also given. For more information regarding the specifics of this data, please refer to Burt and Tortell (2018). Note: The raw data consists of over 1 million time points, and thus has been split into two separate files.

'Raw' data refers to measurements not binned or median-filtered, which are higher-resolution (1 Hz, or per-second), and include a number of large 'spikes'. The height of each individual spike ('spikeheight') is also given. Raw bpp data is accompanied by concurrent measurements of particulate absorption at the 656 nanometer wavelength (ap656). Data from the ships acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) are also given, which includes vertical profiles of ADCP amplitudes (in decibars, extending from 9-147 meters depth in 2 meter bins) measured every 2 minutes. For more information regarding the specifics of this data, please refer to Burt and Tortell (2018).

    Description: The following data set contains particulate absorption, particulate attenuation, and particulate backscatter data from an optical inline system. Auxiliary data from the R/V Sikuliaq's existing underway system has also been attached, this includes standard shipboard physical oceanographic and meteorological data. The data was collected continuously during the cruises following previous work by the authors and IOCCG protocols (Burt et al., 2018 and IOCCG, 2019). The data has been binned to one-minute intervals to match with the existing underway data. The data was collected in the Northern Gulf of Alaska (NGA), as part of the expansion of the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program in the Gulf. The data was collected using an ACS and BB3-eco triplet, on cruise SKQ202106s in the NGA.

    Description: The following data set contains particulate absorption, particulate attenuation, and particulate backscatter data from an optical inline system. Auxiliary data from the R/V Sikuliaq's existing underway system has also been attached, this includes standard shipboard physical oceanographic and meteorological data. The data was collected continuously during the cruises following previous work by the authors and IOCCG protocols (Burt et al., 2018 and IOCCG, 2019). The data has been binned to one-minute intervals to match with the existing underway data. The data was collected in the Northern Gulf of Alaska (NGA), as part of the expansion of the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program in the Gulf. The data was collected using an ACS and BB3-eco triplet, on cruise SKQ202110s in the NGA.

    Description: We report results from two Lagrangian drifter surveys off the Oregon coast, using continuous shipboard sensors to estimate mixed-layer gross primary productivity (GPP), community respiration (CR), and net community production (NCP) from variations in biological oxygen saturation (ΔO2∕Ar) and optically derived particulate organic carbon (POC). At the first drifter survey, conducted in a nearshore upwelling zone during the development of a microplankton bloom, net changes in ΔO2∕Ar and [POC] were significantly decoupled. Differences in GPP and NCP derived from ΔO2∕Ar (NCPO2/Ar) and POC (NCPPOC) time series suggest the presence of large POC losses from the mixed layer. At this site, we utilized the discrepancy between NCPO2/Ar and NCPPOC, and additional constraints derived from surface water excess nitrous oxide (N2O), to evaluate POC loss through particle export, DOC production, and vertical mixing fluxes. At the second drifter survey, conducted in lower-productivity, density-stratified offshore waters, we also observed offsets between ΔO2∕Ar and POC-derived GPP and CR rates. At this site, however, net [POC] and ΔO2∕Ar changes yielded closer agreement in NCP estimates, suggesting a tighter relationship between production and community respiration, as well as lower POC loss rates. These results provide insight into the possibilities and limitations of estimating productivity from continuous underway POC and ΔO2∕Ar data in contrasting oceanic waters. Our observations support the use of diel POC measurements to estimate NCP in lower-productivity waters with limited vertical carbon export and the potential utility of coupled O2 and optical measurements to estimate the fate of POC in high-productivity regions with significant POC export.

    Description: The understanding of the seasonal variability of carbon cycling on the Scotian Shelf in the NW Atlantic Ocean has improved in recent years; however, very little information is available regarding its short-term variability. In order to shed light on this aspect of carbon cycling on the Scotian Shelf we investigate the effects of Hurricane Arthur, which passed the region on 5 July 2014. The hurricane caused a substantial decline in the surface water partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), even though the Scotian Shelf possesses CO2-rich deep waters. High-temporal-resolution data of moored autonomous instruments demonstrate that there is a distinct layer of relatively cold water with low dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) slightly above the thermocline, presumably due to a sustained population of phytoplankton. Strong storm-related wind mixing caused this cold intermediate layer with high phytoplankton biomass to be entrained into the surface mixed layer. At the surface, phytoplankton begin to grow more rapidly due to increased light. The combination of growth and the mixing of low DIC water led to a short-term reduction in the partial pressure of CO2 until wind speeds relaxed and allowed for the restratification of the upper water column. These hurricane-related processes caused a (net) CO2 uptake by the Scotian Shelf region that is comparable to the spring bloom, thus exerting a major impact on the annual CO2 flux budget.
