Notes: Workaholism has received considerable attention in the popular media but little research consideration. This study, using measures of workaholic and non-workaholic type developed by Spence and Robbins, examines the relationship of workaholic type and organizational values supporting work-personal life balance. Data were collected from 530 women and men MBA graduates inprofessional and managerial jobs using questionnaires. The results showed that organizational values supporting work- personal life imbalance were significantly higher in workaholic than non-workaholic types. Practical implications for organizations and management are offered.

Notes: Examines the relationship between perceived threats to job security, job insecurity, job satisfaction and intentions to quit among recent business school graduates. Most job insecurity research has considered longer tenured organizational employees. Anonymous questionnaires were completed by 217 respondents. LISREL analysis provided considerable support for the proposed research model. Perceived threats to job security had direct effects on insecurity and indirect effects on both job satisfaction and intent to quit through job insecurity.

Notes: Purpose - This exploratory study aims to compare job demands, work outcomes, social and coping resources and indicators of psychological and physical health of male and female police officers in Norway. Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected using anonymously completed questionnaires. Findings - Many demographic differences were present in that male officers were older, worked more hours and overtime hours, were more likely to work continuous shiftwork, worked in smaller forces and were less educated. Few differences were found on job demands but male officers experienced more violence and threat, and female officers more harassment and discrimination. The two groups were generally similar on work satisfactions, social and coping resources and psychological and physical health. Research limitations/implications - All data were collected using questionnaires raising the possibility of common method variance. It is also not clear extent to what these findings generalize to police officers in other countries. Practical implications - While few differences were found between male and female police officers, the fact that females reported more harassment and discrimination suggests that police forces need to continue to address these gender issues. Originality/value - While other studies of police officers have suggested widespread gender differences, few appeared here.

Notes: The job training schemes have been and still are important for the supply of labour to cultural institutions in Denmark. Particularly the young and experimental cultural manifestations are depending on labour market subsidies for their development and survival. Discusses the clashes, cultural, labour market and industrial policies, each representing particular objectives which cannot easily be co-ordinated.

Notes: Examines aspects of career development functions, one component of mentoring relationships, as they relate to employee development. Describes the experiences of over 1,200 professional and managerial women and men with their firm's performance appraisal and counselling procedures. Data were collected in a single large professional services firm using anonymously completed questionnaires. The performance appraisal and counselling practices of this firm produced mixed results. Although three-quarters of these employees reported discussions of written performance evaluations, several concerns about procedures were indicated. Offers suggestions for improving organization practice in these areas to develop talent more effectively.

Notes: Examines potential individual difference and work culture correlates of workaholism in organizational settings. Data were collected from 251 women MBA graduates in managerial and professional roles using anonymous questionnaires. Workaholism types were determined using measures developed by Spence and Robbins. Three personal beliefs and fears identified by Price in her cognitive social learning model of Type A behavior were assessed along with organizational values supporting work-personal life balance. Significant workaholism type effects were present in both individual difference and work culture measures.

Notes: Examines benefits of mentoring relationships in organizations from theperspective of mentors. A model which included personal and situationalantecedents of mentoring, as well as personal and organizationalconsequences of mentoring was developed, based on previous researchfindings. Data were obtained from 94 mentors employed in seven hightechnology firms using questionnaires. Support was found for theproposed research model. Mentor-protégé similarity emerged as an importantpredictor of mentor functions. Proposes practical implications of thefindings for organizations and future directions for mentoring research.

Notes: Notes that organizations throughout the industrialized world continue to downsize and restructure in response to global competitive pressures. Some firms downsize more than once, and indications are that downsizing and restructuring efforts will continue over the next decade at least. States that, unfortunately, many, perhaps half of these initiatives are unsuccessful. Outlines a three-stage model designed to improve downsizing and restructuring efforts. The first stage, initiation, involves planning the revitalization efforts. The second stage, implementation, outlines the ways of smoothing the transition. The final stage, institutionalization, comes to grips with healing and refocusing the organization.

Notes: Examines the relationship of employment gaps to measures of work outcomes and emotional wellbeing. Data were collected from a diverse sample of 792 managerial and professional women using questionnaires completed anonymously. Managerial women with more employment gaps were older, more likely married, had more children if married, earned less income and worked fewer hours and extra hours per week. Women with more employment gaps also reported less job and career satisfaction, less job involvement and less optimistic career prospects. Employment gaps were not related to psychological wellbeing, however. Women reporting more employment gaps still earned less income and were less satisfied with their careers, when other factors were controlled.

Notes: Examines the relationship of individual demographiccharacteristics, work-setting factors and work outcomes to perceivedbias, both personally experienced and observed in organizationaldecision making. Data were collected from 829 women and 766 men employedin a single professional services firm using anonymously completedquestionnaires. Although both women and men perceived bias, womenreported significantly higher levels of both personally experienced andobserved bias. Perceived bias was correlated with work settings and workoutcomes similarly for women and men. Women and men experiencing andobserving more bias, described the work setting as less favourable andwere less satisfied, more likely to quit and saw the organization asless committed to fairness and due process. Draws implications formanagement and organizations.
