Notes: Abstract The effects of He and Ar bombardment on carbon produced in a N-implanted Cr-rich steel are studied by means of conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy, glancing X-ray and nuclear reaction analysis techniques. The results show two main features: dissolution and reprecipitation of the produced carbonitrides and modification of the thermal behavior of the precipitates. Comparison with similar experiments performed on Fe and on low-carbon steel show that the matrix composition plays an important role in the above processes.

Notes: Diffuse X-ray scattering measurements have been performed on a non-stoichiometric spinel single crystal, MgO-3Al2O3, with 10% octahedral vacancies, and the following conclusions have been reached. The probability of a vacancy occupying a site adjacent to another vacancy is □□ = 0.20, compared to 0.10 for a completely disordered model. This probability is consistent with the Jagodzinski-Haefner model. The distance between neighbouring A1 atoms in octahedral sites is 1% larger than the mean value. The distance between the octahedral Al and its neighbouring oxygen atoms is 0.5% shorter than the mean, and the vacancy-oxygen distance is 5% larger. By comparison between stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric spinels, a large Debye-Waller factor for static displacement is derived. This factor leads to a qualitative explanation of the observed anisotropy of the thermal and pseudo-thermal diffuse scattering. The large local displacement permits one to observe the second-order term, (kδri)(kδrj), of the displacement correlation between the oxygen atoms of the occupied octahedral sites.

Notes: Two of the magnetic superlattice Bragg reflections of a single crystal of hematite (Fe2O3) have been measured by diffraction of X-rays produced from a conventional source, and compared to the intensities expected from the photon-spin scattering. Several orientations of the spins relative to the beams have been realized by rotating the crystal and by changing its temperature through the Morin (spin-flip) transition; in some of the measurements, the polarization produced by the monochromator was enhanced and this produced a visible asymmetry in the dependence of the intensities on the spin direction. The variations of the intensities during these changes of configuration are characteristic of magnetic scattering; the observed variations, as well as the absolute intensities, agree with the theory apart from some discrepancies. These may be due to intense multiple-scattering effects, and to some possible anomalies in the spin direction near the sample surface. As an application of this technique, changes of the direction of magnetization when a magnetic field is applied to the weakly ferromagnetic room-temperature phase have been investigated.

Notes: When the incident angle α of an X-ray beam (λ ∼ 1 Å) on a surface is increased, the penetration depth changes from 30 Å (α = 0.1°) to 10 μm (α ∼ 1°). The X-ray fluorescence observed is sensitive to the chemical composition of the irradiated layer. If the composition changes with the depth z (for example in the case of ionic implantation), the spectrum depends on α and the variation with α of the X-ray emission intensity of one of the elements is related to its concentration profile c(z). It is shown that c(z) can be determined with a layered-medium approximation. The profile thus obtained is in good agreement with that obtained by the destructive and heavy secondary ionic emission (SIMS) method. The same mathematical treatment can be used, from X-ray measurements, in order to determine other profiles (amorphization etc.).

Notes: The calculation of the amplitude of X-rays scattered by a magnetically ordered substance, carried out in the relativistic quantum theory (i.e. taking the spin into account), is detailed. The effect of the orbital momentum is described in an appendix. The practical formulae dealing with the polarization of the beams are given both in a simple form for the usual experiments and in a complete form, using the Stokes vectors, for the most general case. The experiments show a change in the intensity of the X-rays diffracted by a ferromagnetic (pure iron) or a ferrimagnetic (zinc-substituted magnetite) powder when the magnetization, perpendicular to the diffraction plane, is reversed. The relative values of these intensity changes range from 10-4 to 5 x 10-3 and agree in sign and magnitude with the predictions. They are proportional to the spin-density structure factor multiplied by the imaginary part of the charge- density structure factor; the large anomalous scattering of the Cu Kα radiation in the iron-containing samples is used in the present experiments.

Notes: The penetration depth τ of an X-ray beam (λ ∼ 1 Å) incident on a surface with an angle α decreases rapidly when α goes below αc, the critical angle of total reflexion. It is shown experimentally that at the same time the Bragg peaks have a stick-like shape perpendicular to the sample surface. The variation of the depth τ as a function of α has been determined by measuring the length of the stick. The variation of the Bragg intensity and the position of the peak as well as the depth are calculated precisely using the simple Fresnel formulae.

Notes: The reported experiment is based upon two phenomena: (1) synchrotron radiation, when observed at some tenths of milliradians from the orbital plane, is elliptically polarized; (2) the Bragg intensity diffracted by a ferro- or ferrimagnetic sample depends on the orientation of the magnetization relative to the incident and diffracted beams, by a term which is proportional to the circular polarization rate. A vertical-axis X-ray diffractometer was placed at the beam port D11 at LURE-DCI, the wavelength being 1.804 Å. It can be moved vertically, so as to receive radiation with variable circular polarization. The sample, powdered Zn0.5Fe2.5O4, was magnetized in a horizontal direction by an electromagnet whose field is reversed every 20 s: the difference between the intensities diffracted with the field in the two directions was measured for three Bragg peaks and three polarization rates. The vertical position of the beam center, as well as the width of the source, were determined from the variation of the linear polarization versus the height; this polarization is obtained by the measurement of two Bragg peaks. The results agree with the theory as regards their signs and their absolute values, in the limits of the errors, which are about 20%.
