    Notes: The electron density distribution in H2S2, S2, S3, S4, S6, S8, 2,5-dimethyl-6a-thiathiophthene (DMT), tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMTD), and S4N4 are examined using ab initio linear combination atomic orbital–molecular orbital methods. The inclusion of polarization functions in the basis set is found to be necessary to give a satisfactory description of the electron density distribution in these molecules. The effects of electron correlation on the electron density distribution in H2S2, S2, and S3 are assessed using configuration interaction, and are found to be less important than the use of polarization functions in the basis set. Comparisons of theoretical and experimental electron density distribution maps are made for S8, DMT, TMTD, and S4N4. The deformation density in sulfur–sulfur bonds is found to have a single peak at the bond midpoint, in contrast to the complicated double-maximum distribution commonly observed in experimental studies. The presence of deformation density peaks between across-the-ring sulfur atoms in S4N4 is confirmed, but a peak at the center of the molecule is not.

    Notes: Ocean Drilling Program hole 504B revealed an ocean crust hydrothermal sulphur anomaly on the dyke–lava transition, with implications for global sulphur sinks. Here we confirm the presence of the anomaly sporadically along 7.5 km of dyke–basalt contact on the Macquarie Ridge at Macquarie Island, a 39–9.7 Ma slow-spreading setting. Background contact-zone pyrite S contents average 1845 p.p.m. across ∼50 m. However, zones of small-scale brittle faulting that commonly occur on and above the dyke–basalt contact average between 5000 and 11 000 p.p.m. S (20–30 m widths). These consist of steep ridge-parallel faults and fault splays on the contact, overlain by up to 50 m of linked pyritic fault trellis. The contact zone faults are haloed by disseminated pyrite–chlorite, cross-cut by quartz–chlorite–sphalerite and epidote-cemented breccias, containing evidence of turbulent flow. The structural control on sulphur deposition is attributed to the active extensional slow spreading setting. With increasing extension, diffuse mixing across the contact was replaced by channellized flow and dynamic mixing in fault arrays. The magnitude of the dyke–lava transition sulphur sink must be reassessed to take account of this heterogeneity.

    Notes: Summary The initial rate of radical copolymerization of vinyl acetate(D) and maleic anhydride(A) was measured dilatometrically in methyl ethyl ketone at 50°C. The rate was found to be maximum at the feed maleic anhydride mole fraction of 0.40,0.44 and 0.47 when the total monomer concentration was 0.75 M.1.50 M and 2.25 M, respectively. Participation of both free monomers and the complex was considered. Georgiev and Zubov's method gave α=kAD/kDA=0.24, βA=kAC/kAC=35,βD=kDC/kDA =2.2 and kAC/kDC=3.9. The equilibrium constant of donor-acceptor complexation between vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride was determined to be 0.030 in acetonitrile at 27°C.
