Description / Table of Contents: Summary The outgrowing of hooves occurs with all ungulata among deer. The causes are considered to be unsuitable soils, chronical diseases, and injuries, but in the case of roe deer disturbances of metabolism or hyperkeratosis could not always be excluded as sole causes. By an animal test with two mouflons the hooves of which were grown out it could be proved that solely unsuitable soil conditions were the cause. The material of dissection during the last two years contained several cases where injuries in one or several legs had led to the outgrowing of hooves. In the case of a five year old wild boar an ulcerating bowel inflammation of long duration led to the outgrowth of hooves because of lack movement of the animal. Histological examinations of the corium of the hooves did generally not result in pathological findings. Only when because of the breaking out of the hoof's horn the corium had been laid free and infected progressive necrotizing progresses could be stated. Such cases were only found with mouflons. In case of roe deer the hoof's horn does not break out so easily and the horn shoe remains closed and no necrosis may occur at the corium or the hoof's bone.
