Notes: Abstract Midwater fishes were sampled at night to a depth of 400 m in oceanic waters east of Tasmania, Australia, in May/June of 1992, 1993 and 1994. We examined whether there were differences in the distribution and density of these fishes in relation to the subtropical convergence (STC) separating East Australia Current (EAC) water from subantarctic water (SAW) to the south. A total of 23999 fishes from 107 taxa and 43 families were identified. Four new records were identified from the study area. Myctophids and stomiatoids were the main fish taxa captured. We found no evidence of increased density of the combined fish catch in any particular area. However, differences between areas in the density of individual species were noted, although no species was confined to any one area. Ceratoscopelus warmingi, Lobianchia dofleini and Vinciguerria spp. were most abundant in the EAC, whereas Lampichthys procerus was most abundant in the SAW. Only Diaphus danae was found in significantly higher numbers in the STC. Multivariate analysis revealed that community structure in the EAC was significantly different from that of the SAW but not from the STC. Further, when separated by depth, the shallow EAC group was significantly different in all group comparisons bar that with the shallow STC. Our data indicated that the thin EAC layer above 200 m could be distinguished by its fauna from the SAW. However, we could not detect a separate community in the STC. We conclude, therefore, that the STC is not an area of increased micronekton abundance, nor does it contain a distinct community, during the Australian autumn/winter.

Notes: L and width 2w, then by a selection of viewing window is meant a choice of w, with the intent being to search for optimal viewing windows, with the goal in mind of improving variances of estimators of population density, reducing sampling effort, while maintaining the property of unbiasedness. The notions of increasing window sensitivity (IWS) and decreasing window sensitivity (DWS) are introduced, and a method of deriving confidence intervals is discussed.

Notes: The gallium complexes were produced in pulsed molecular beams and studied with zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy. Intermolecular vibrational frequencies and adiabatic ionization potentials (IPs) were obtained from ZEKE spectra. Ground electronic states were identified by combining the ZEKE spectra with quantum chemical and Franck–Condon calculations. Ga–NH3 has an IP of 40 135 cm−1 and metal-ligand stretching frequencies of 270 cm−1 (ωs+) in the ion and 161 cm−1 (νs) in the neutral. The IP of Ga–NH2CH3 is 39 330 cm−1, and the vibrational frequencies are 93 cm−1 (νb) for the Ga–N–C bending, 124 cm−1 (ωb+) for the Ga+–N–C bending, and 299 cm−1 (ωs+) for the Ga+–N stretching. The strength of the gallium–methylamine binding is stronger than that of the gallium–ammonia. The ground state of Ga–NH3 is 2A′(Cs) and that of Ga+–NH3 is 1A1(C3v). In contrast, Ga–NH2CH3 has two doublets, 2A′ and 2A″(Cs), with virtually the same energies, whereas Ga+–NH2CH3 has a 1A′(Cs) ground state. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Utilization of storage lipids and storage proteins by non-feeding north-west Atlantic herring was assessed under conditions of: (1) concurrent gonad maturation and overwintering periods with differing rates of gonad development for males and females (spring-spawncrs); (2) overwintering, reproductively dormant and spent males and females (autumn-spawners); and (3) approximately equivalent rates of gonad development during late summer for males and females (autumn-spawners). Storage lipids were depleted by all non-feeding fish but storage proteins were depleted only by herring with measurable gonad development during the observation period independently of season (female spring-spawners, maturing male and female autumn-spawners). The analyses indicate that storage lipids sustain routine and active metabolism while storage proteins are utilized to develop gonad. Therefore, the relative investment into reproduction versus routine and active metabolism can be evaluated separately for non-feeding herring using readily obtainable tissue proximate composition data.

Notes: Abstract Various governmental regulatory agencies are responsible for establishing regulations on the discharge of chlorinated organic compounds from pulp and paper mills. The procedures for setting permit limits are the basic topic of this article. Different methods of determining permit limits are set forth and discussed in a number of references, including documents of the Environmental Protection Agency. This paper discusses in detail the application of one particular methodology—the lognormal model approach. In this paper we utilize a real data set and include the necessary calculations required to set up permit limits. The basic tenets of the permit process are such that if limits are set too low, operators who are in full regulatory compliance will still be frequently cited, and if limits are set too high, operators who are not in compliance will seldom if ever be cited. Thus there is a great need for these effluent limits to be determined with great care, both to protect the environment receiving the wastewater and the industry producing the wastewater.

Notes: [Auszug] In previous studies of EPM1, we had identified seven families showing linkage to the PFKL locus in 21q22.3 (ref. 3). Subsequently, we obtained blood or genomic DNA samples from an additional eight families, and five affected individuals for which the family material was not available (numbered ...

Notes: Abstract We analyze gust probe measurements obtained in the convective boundary layer over the central equatorial Pacific as part of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean Climate Studies (EPOCS) program. From the lowest level flights, the bulk transfer coefficients are found to be 1.1 × 10-3 and 1.4 × 10-3 for latent and sensible heat fluxes, respectively. Vertical profiles of water vapor density, potential temperature and wind velocity are obtained as are the profiles of the fluxes of latent and sensible heat and momentum. From the extrapolated profiles, we obtain surface fluxes of 120 W m-2 and 13 W m-2 for latent and sensible heat, respectively, and 0.11 N m-2 for momentum. The 10 m drag coefficient is 1.5 × 10-3. Two convergence boxes, north and south of the ITCZ, are analyzed. Enhanced convergence is found in the northern trades relative to the southern trades. The advective acceleration is found to be comparable in magnitude to the other terms in the horizontal equations of motion.

Notes: Abstract Hyperbolic dispersion relations are used to examine elasticKN and tintin1N amplitudes in the resonance region, and to extrapolate them to the annihilation channel. By evaluating the relations on a set of paths interior to the elastic channel physical regions, a spin separation oft-channel contributions is effected, and resonance couplings deduced. The results show clear evidence for effects attributable to exchanges withJ≦3, several of which have not previously been isolated. The special problems associated with the isoscalarS-wave states are discussed, and an estimate made of the ɛ-S * mixing angle.

Notes: Abstract The finite element program BERSAFE is used to analyse an edge-cracked square plate under mode II loading in the elastic-plastic regime. Plane strain constraint and power law hardening withn = 3 are assumed. Crack tip stress and strain fields are investigated and shown to equal the HRR fields at all loads from small scale yielding through into general yielding.
