Description / Table of Contents:
Olefindiazonium SaltsThe action of Lewis acids such as tin tetrachloride, aluminium chloride or antimony pentachloride on the p-toluenesulfonylhydrazones 7 of α-halogenated aldehydes and ketones leads via an azoolefin intermediate 8 to olefindiazonium salts (for example 9). 2,2-Dichloroethylene-1-diazonium hexachloroantimonate (6a) can also be prepared from 2,2-dichlorovinyl isocyanate (5) and the corresponding nitrosonium salt. Alkenediazonium ions with lifetimes long enough to permit isolation require a high energy level in the vinyl cations which arise from the loss of nitrogen. Exceptions from this rule are given by the compounds 22 and 23 in which the β-substituents display a remarkable resonance with the diazonium group. The strongly electrophilic behaviour of olefindiazonium salts is demonstrated by the stepwise reaction of 6a with anisole and methanol resulting in the formation of 2-chloro-2-(p-methoxy-phenyl)ethylene-1-diazonium and 2-methoxy-2-(p-methoxyphenyl)ethylene-1-diazonium hexa-chloroantimonate (25 and 26), respectively. The influence of electron-releasing substituents in the 2-position of ethylenediazonium ions can change the nature of the N ≡ N triple bond to such an extent, that it becomes comparable to that of ethyl diazoacetate.
Notes:
