    Notes: Summary From the conservation of the mass of the earth including the hydrosphere it can be concluded that continental growth has been connected with subcrustal flow from the ocean toward the continents. Calculations show that the volume of ocean bottom subsidence nearly equals to the volume of the uplifted continental masses above the level of the primeval ocean bottom. The sea level has not changed appreciably since Precambrian. Change of ocean bottom topography and emergence of continents do not effect global sea level. Transgression and regression are figurative terms and really indicate subsidence resp. uplift of the continental crust blocks around the shoreline.

    Notes: Summary Temperature and conductivity measurements show, that in the Southern part of Transdanubia (the part of Hungary which lies Westwards from Danube) the heat flow is about 2–2.4·10−6 cal/cm2 sec. Eastward from the Danube, in the Hungarian Plain estimates are even higher, and vary between 2.3·10−6 and 2.8·10−6 cgs. The gradient of temperature is everywhere quite high, 5.0 resp. 5.8·10−4 deg. C/cm on the average. Thus, at a depth of 1000 m, the virgin rock temperature is about 60–70 deg. C, at 2000 m about 110–130 deg. C.

    Notes: Summary Although active volcanic territories are not characterised by extreme high heat flow, yet terrestrial heat is one of the main, if not hte first cause of volcanic activities. About 94 per cent of the known active volcanoes are in connection with orogenic zones including ocean ridges, which mean that processes responsible for the evolution of the continents cause the overwhelming majority of volcanism. There stages of the evolution of the continental crust can be distinguished: 1.) Growth of the continental cores by differentiation, 2.) Existence of peripheral growing zones around the first core, 3.) Intergrowth of the existing continents. Volcanism, as well as seismicity are manifestations of the evolution of the crust which is caused by the development of heat sources in the mantle. The heat partly melt the upper mantle and induce slow plastic flow in connection of differentiation. The space, left empty by continental uplift is filled by the slow plastic inflow of mantle from the ocean. This slow redistribution of mantle and curstal rocks disturbs the stress field, the rocks fail along the strained zones and zones of fractures appear sometimes with volcanic activity.

    Notes: Summary Measurements of thermal gradients and rock conductivity in the steam field of Larderello, along a cross section of about 12 km length, reveal a great anomaly of terrestrial heat flow. Heat flow varies between 6 and 14μ cal-cm2 sec, while thermal gradients are between 200 and 800 deg C-km. The measurements show that heat flow values characterize better the productive areas than thermal gradient anomalies. Knowing the heat flow it is possible to set up the thermal balance of the steam producing area, which is of considerable importance in planning the production of the steam field.

    Notes: Summary The natural gas field of Hajduszoboszló in the Hungarian plain offered several virgin rock temperature measurements, further rock samples for measurement of conductivity. The Paleozoic bottom rock is covered by Mezozoic and Tertiary sediments inclusively flysch. One big and three small gas caps are found at a depth of about 1000 to 1200 in anticlyne structures. The average temperature gradient is 60° C/km. The heat flow is between 2.2 and 2.7 μ cal/cm2 sec, which is consistent to other heat flow values measured in the Hungarian basin.
