Notes: Fluidized beds offer a potential improvement of reverse osmosis processes for food liquids, less fouling of the membrane, and reduced energy consumption. Our experiments were concerned with tubular systems in which fluidized beds of glass, steel, and lead beads were used. Glass beads appeared to be preferable, since they caused little damage to the membrane. Only with the larger glass beads (3 mm) did the membrane skin become corrugated, so that the rejection decreased. The permeate flux for Gouda cheese whey was almost equal to that of an empty tube for which the velocity was about thirty times higher. The erosive action of the glass beads on the fouling layer was partially responsible for this effect. For reverse osmosis of skim milk and potato fruit water the bed did not reduce the fouling layer to a sufficient extent and, therefore, had a lower permeate flux than an empty tube.

Notes: The magnetic properties of (Y,Nd)Co4B, Y(Co,Fe)4B, and YCo4(B,C) compounds have been investigated. The spin-reorientation temperature of YCo4B increases with substitution of Nd for Y and Fe for Co, but decreases with the replacement of B for C. The Curie temperature of YCo4B decreases upon substitution of Nd for Y and C for B, whereas it increases upon the introduction of Fe. The magnetic phase diagrams are given for (Y,Nd)Co4B, Y(Co,Fe)4B, and YCo4(B,C). The results show that the temperature range of the easy-axis anisotropy in YCo4B is increased by C substitution, and decreased by Nd and Fe substitution. The saturation magnetization of YCo4B increases by the introduction of Nd and Fe. Substitution of C for B changes the magnetic moment of Co only slightly. The magnetic anisotropy is increased by substitution of C for B.

Notes: Phosphonic acid was more effective in inhibiting the production of sporangia of Phytophthora clandestina in sterile pond water (ED50= 1·4 p.p.m.) than it was in inhibiting the growth of mycelium of the fungus on either corn meal agar (ED50= 13·8p.p.m.) or lima bean agar (ED50= 236 p.p.m.). Experiments under controlled environmental conditions showed that better control of tap root rot of subterranean clover caused by P. clandestina was achieved by application of potassium phosphonate to a pasteurized soil mixture than by a spray on the foliage alone. However, in a soil from a pasture, foliar sprays were more effective than soil treatments. Application of superphosphate at a rate of 250 kg/ha or higher to the soil reduced the effectiveness of sprays. In three experiments in irrigated pastures a spray of potassium phosphonate at 300 or 313 ml/ha, applied to cotyledons of subterranean clover and to soil, reduced severity of Phytophthora root rot and increased the annual production of dry matter of the legume by 1·96 to 5·11 t/ha in comparison with untreated controls.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The beam theory for infinitesimal deformations of a prismatic singular or multicelled box beam is given using approximations for shear-deformations and for deformations of the cross section. The resulting system of differential equations describes the behaviour of a prismatic beam under a general loading. Furthermore they include the case of stability from collapse as well as the equations of free and forced vibrations. The differential equations are applied to the case of a single celled box beam under free torsion vibration supported at both ends.

Notes: Summary For ideal plastic deformed porous solids filled up with fluid, extremum principles are formulated: a minimum principle for the velocities and a maximum principle for the stresses. These principles enable to restrict the exact solution of boundary-value problems. This is shown in an example.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This paper deals with the bending of a plate-strip of incompressible material with finite strains. The plate-strip first reaches the elastic and then the elasto-plastic state as the angle of bending increases. Stresses and deformations in azimuthal and radial direction of the plate-strip are determined for different states of deformation. Among other findings the result is that the bending moment, after reaching a maximum, and the thickness of the plate strip dimmish with increasing angle of bending.

Notes: Summary Although the phenomenon of effective stresses was known for a long time, the theoretical foundation has remained unsatisfactory until now. Due to new experimental and theoretical findings in the porous media theory, the concept of effective stresses will be reexamined. This is necessary for porous media such as concrete and rock which show at high pressure a significant deviation of the real effective stresses from those calculated with von Terzaghi's concept due to the compressibility of the true material. A second feature of the present paper is the investigation of the effective stress “principle” in unsaturated porous media.
