Notes: The complete solution for the quantum-mechanical problem of a particle in an equilateral triangle is derived. By use of projection operators, eigenfunctions belonging explicitly to each of the irreducible representations of the symmetry group C3V are constructed. The most natural definition of the quantum numbers p and q includes not only integers but also nonintegers of the class (1)/(3) and (2)/(3) modulo 1. Some relevant features relating to symmetry and degeneracy are also discussed.

Notes: The electronic partition function for the hydrogen atom is derived by integration over the recently-available Coulomb propagator. This provides a resolution to an old paradox in statistical mechanics: the apparent divergence of the hydrogen partition function. Electronic excitation does not contribute significantly to the standard-state partition function until temperatures of the order of 5000 K. Thereafter, the continuum, with its immense density of states, makes the dominant contribution. From the discrete and continuum contributions to the partition function, a modification of the Saha–Boltzmann equation for the ionization equilibrium in atomic hydrogen is derived. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Hostler [J. Math. Phys. 11, 2966 (1970)] has shown that Coulomb Green's functions of different dimensionality N are related by G(N+2)=OG(N), where O is a first-order derivative operator in the variables x and y. Thus all the even-dimensional functions are connected, as are analogously the odd-dimensional functions. It is shown that the operations of functional differentiation and integration can further connect the even- to the odd-dimensional functions, so that Hostler's relation can be extended to give G(N+1)=O1/2G(N).

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Um zu Näherungen $$\tilde K$$ (q, q′, τ) für die Dirac-Feynman-Greensche Funktion eines quantenmechanischen Systems zu gelangen, wird der Parameter $${\mathcal{L}\tilde K}$$ definiert, wobei ℒ≡i∂/∂τ−ℋ füriδ/δτ — ℋ steht.
Notes: Abstract For a suitable approximation $$\tilde K$$ (q, q′, τ) to the Dirac-Feynman Green's function of a quantummechanical system, the parameter $${\mathcal{L}\tilde K}$$ is defined, where ℒ≡i∂/∂τ−ℋ. It is shown thatΔ≧0 andΔ→0 asK→K, the exact Green's function, thus providing a criterion on approximate Green's functions analogous in its role to the variational principle for wavefunctions. A second somewhat weaker criterion is also proposed, based on $$\Sigma \equiv \left[ {tr\tilde K*tr\mathcal{L}^2 \tilde K - |tr\mathcal{L}\tilde K|^2 } \right]_{\tau avg} \geqq 0$$ . Recipes are given for projecting out continuum contributions toΔ or∑ and for analyzing for the discrete eigen-value spectrum.

Notes: Abstract A model for the Fermi contact interaction is proposed in which the nuclear moment is represented as a magnetized spherical shell of radius r 0. For a hydrogen-like system thus perturbed, the Schrödinger equation is solvable without perturbation theory by use of the Coulomb Green's function. Approximation formulas are derived in terms of a quantum defect in the Coulombic energy formula. It is shown that the usual Fermi potential cannot be applied beyond first-order perturbation theory.

Notes: Abstract A generalization of Unsöld's theorem is derived, giving the sum over bothl andm for products of hydrogenic functions with givenn. A generalized radial distribution functionD n (r) is introduced and its properties discussed. Asn → ∞,D n (r) approaches a universal reduced form, for which an empirical representation is given.

Notes: Abstract The electronic partition function for the hydrogen atom was recently derived by integration over the Coulomb propagator. A much simpler derivation is given here, based on Schrödinger's exact solution for a hydrogenic atom in a Riemannian space of positive curvature. The energy spectrum is entirely discrete, including states which correspond to the ionized atom. The curvature in Riemannian space is shown to be equivalent to a finite volume in Euclidean space.
