Notes: The efficiency of aircraft and industrial gas turbines and combustion engines depends onthe maximum operation temperature and, therefore, on the properties of the commercial hightemperature materials. In the temperature range 500°C to 750°C γ-titanium aluminides especiallyalloys of the third generation represent an attractive alternative to the established nickel-basesuperalloys which have the double density. Due to superimposed cyclic thermal and cyclicmechanical loadings during start-up and shut-down operations structural components in gas turbinesand combustion engines may not only be exposed to isothermal but also to thermo-mechanical fatigue(TMF). In this study the cyclic deformation and fatigue behaviour under thermo-mechanical load ofthe γ-TiAl alloy TNB-V5 with near-gamma microstructure is evaluated. To set a fatigue-life relationstrain-controlled thermo-mechanical fatigue tests were carried out with two different strain ranges, different temperature-strain cycles and different temperature ranges from 400°C to 800°C. Additionallow-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were performed at 400°C, 600°C and 800°C for comparison. Cyclicdeformation curves, stress-strain hysteresis loops and fatigue lives of the tests are presented. Theshortest fatigue lives are always observed in out-of phase (OP) tests, the longest in in-phase (IP) tests.Clockwise-diamond (CD) and counter-clockwise diamond (CCD) testing yield similar fatigue livesintermediate between those of OP and IP tests. For a general life prediction the double-logarithmicplot of the damage parameter by Smith, Watson and Topper vs. fatigue life is well suitable

Notes: A statistical model of fatigue damage evolution has been developed for particulate-reinforced metal-matrix-composites (MMCs) by taking into considerations both the initial damage distribution and the effect of particulate reinforcement on fatigue damage development. The growth of microscopically fatigue-damaged regions in particulate-reinforced MMCs is considered as a stochastic process, and both the non-equilibrium statistical method and minimum strength principle are used to establish the evolution equation of fatigue damage. The fatigue damage evolution equation developed in the present study characterizes not only the kinetic process of fatigue damage evolution but also sets up the relationship between the mechanism of fatigue damage growth of the microscopically damaged regions and the result of fatigue damage, i.e. degradation of mechanical properties of particulate-reinforced MMCs. A new expression for calculating the cumulative fatigue damage and a new formula for predicting the average fatigue strength of the particulate-reinforced MMCs are derived. Experimental data of 2080Al/SiCp composites are analysed and compared with results obtained with the present model. It is shown that the experimental results can be described well by the calculations.

Notes: Abstract A computer-based method is used to simulate the process of penetration of a foreign element (e.g., oxygen) into an alloy connected with internal precipitation of a compound of this element with a solute in the alloy. The method employed is based on the solution of the differential equations corresponding to this high-temperature corrosion phenomenon with the help of the finite-difference technique. To demonstrate the possibilities of the calculation method, various cases were treated which differ especially regarding the thermodynamic stability of the internal precipitates. The calculated concentration profiles and penetration depths obtained are reported and discussed. In the case of internal precipitates of high stability, the results are compared with the approaches derived in the literature for internal oxidation and are used to determine the parameter ranges in which the analytical equations apply. The results obtained for the case of a less-stable compound is used to illustrate the influence of the solubility product on the concentration profiles.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ausgehend von der „Probierkunst“ im 16.
Notes: Summary Starting from the assaying (“Probierkunst”) in the 16th century as a forerunner of modern iron and steel chemistry the trend of increasing mechanization in analysis and the development to the “analysis factory” as a service institution is shown. The obligation to optimize the analytical work and to reduce costs needs extensive laboratory automation. Via reorganisation, mechanization of analytical methods, data processing and motivation of collaborators the analysis was integrated within the system of the analysis factory. The interaction between laboratory management, analysis laboratory and data administration, statistics and assurance of analytical results was simplified and intensified by application of data processing. The best system with regard to efficiency and use to capacity was a mixture of central and decentral data processing. The installed laboratory information system assists the management and the chemists at the different places of work in analysis and decision. The long-distance transmission of analysis reports, the operation in dialogue between the computer and the place of measurement, a search program for filed data and programs for various statistical evalutions are particular advantages of laboratory information system.
