The Judd–Ofelt theory has so far been extensively applied to absorption and fluorescence spectra of lanthanide ions in crystal and solution state only. For the first time it has been successfully applied in the modified form to interpret the spectral intensities of solid state spectra of lanthanide ions using the diffuse reflectance technique. As an illustration the diffuse reflectance spectra of Pr3+ and Nd3+ complexes of glycine as primary ligand and ethylenediamine as secondary ligand have been reported and interpreted.
