Notes: Abstract Thin titanium and titanium oxide films, both covered by ultra-thin gold layers, have been compared with titanium films after analysis, using a combination of SEM and AES. The Ti films were prepared under UHV conditions by evaporation on a glass substrate. The Ti oxide layers were prepared in situ by precisely controlled oxygen sorption at 298 K on Ti film. Both Ti and Ti oxide films were then covered in situ by a very thin Au layer. Analysis was performed in a separate system after long-term exposure of the films to air. SEM analysis revealed a much smaller size grain on the Au coated Ti films than on Ti films not coated with a Au layer. The thin gold layers covering the Ti surface prevent an extensive air interaction with Ti film. The analysis of the features of the Ti Auger spectra during the sputter profile measurements allow to characterise the chemical nature of Ti-oxide formed in Ti/Au interface region.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the acoustical information present in the field of arbitrary sound sources which may provide direction and distance to the source from a local reading of the sound field parameters. If the effects of reflections are negligible, the particle acceleration is directed radially at the instant of sound pressure nulls. The spectral relation between the radial component of the particle aceleration and the sound pressure is characterized by a critical frequency where a sharp transition occurs in the amplitude ratio and the phase relation of these variables. The critical frequency depends on the distance to the source and depends little on the source type (mono-, di- or quadrupole). Thus, a local reading of the particle acceleration and the sound pressure is in principle sufficient to localize the sound source in three dimensions. Fish might use this kind of information for acoustic orientation.

Notes: Summary The renal clearance of theophylline (TH) and its metabolites 1,3-dimethyluric acid (1,3-DMU), 3-methylxanthine (3-MX), and 1-methyluric acid (1-MU) has been studied in 10 children aged 8 months to 14 years. Individual renal clearances were calculated from serum levels and amounts excreted in urine after i.v. administration of the parent drug. The clearance of 1,3-DMU was found to depend both upon urine flow rate and age, which are interrelated. An effect of urinary pH was expected, but was not studied. Consistent age-dependent changes in the relative quantities of metabolites excreted were not observed.

Notes: Summary Previous studies showed that probucol significantly lowered both LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. In addition, there is evidence that as an essential anti-oxidant probucol causes variations in cellular interactions and cardiovascular functions in patients. Therefore, 14 hypercholesterolemic men were investigated before and during probucol treatment in order to document both serological and cardiovascular changes with special regard to (1) serum apolipoproteins (A-1, A-II, B, C-II, C-III, E) (2) composition and distribution of HDL and LDL subfractions, (3) cardiovascular performance using a maximum exercise stress test, and (4) induced platelet aggregation. In contrast to reduced total, LDL-, and HDL-cholesterol values, highly significant changes in serum apolipoproteins were found in apo A-I only; apoA-II was unchanged both in serum and in HDL subfractions. Despite unchanged serum apoB levels, the results showed that probucol has a significant influence on the composition (TG/FC ratio) of LDL particles of d 〈 1.019 g/ml. In addition to lipoprotein-related changes, significant decreases in heart rate data and cardiac work and in lactic acid accumulation during exercise were induced by probucol administration; furthermore, adrenaline-induced platelet aggregation was also decreased. The results found significantly demonstrate that probucol acts by way of more mechanisms than cholesterol lowering alone. This aspect may be of special interest in the clinical use of probucol, because a coronary-risk-reducing therapy should not affect the lipoprotein profile only.

Notes: Abstract Red cell folate concentrations were determined in 74 epileptic women in early pregnancy in a prospective study. All patients were treated continuously with antiepileptic drugs since before conception. The most frequently used drugs were carbamazepine (n−39) and phenytoin (n−26). Sixty-four patients (86%) were on monotherapy. Blood samples for red cell folate and antiepileptic drug concentrations were drawn before folate supplementation. Red cell folate levels in patients, 468 nmol·l−1, did not differ from those in non-epileptic, drug-free, pregnant women, 416 nmol·l−1 or from those in non-pregnant age-matched healthy controls, 412 nmol·l−1. No correlation was found between red cell folate concentrations and doses or plasma levels of phenytoin or carbamazepine.

Notes: Analysis of drawdown data from either the pumped well or an observation well in a horizontal, wedge-shaped aquifer results in determination of the distances from the well to the four nearest image wells. These results may be used, in the case of pumped-well data alone, to determine the wedge angle; if only observation-well data are used, eight possible positions of the wedge can be determined; a combination of pumped-well and observation-well data further reduces the number of possible wedge configurations to two, which are each other's mirror image in the line through the wells; only additional geologic or hydrologic information can distinguish between these two to delineate the aquifer area completely.
