    Description: We study axisymmetric plume dispersion from a steady source of mass, momentum and/or heat that is subjected to either a time-dependent large-scale external vortex or small-scale turbulent axisymmetric helicity. On the basis of the turbulent boundary layer and Boussinesq assumptions and by assuming similarity profiles with Gaussian distribution in the radial direction the balance equations of mass, momentum, and energy reduce to a system of nonlinear differential equations for amplitude functions of axial velocity, pressure and density differences as well as azimuthal velocity. The system of equations is closed with Taylor's entrainment assumption. The plume radius and the typical radius of the large-scale external vortex are also determined. For a simple density structure of the ambient atmosphere (i.e. adiabatic conditions) analytical results can be obtained, but for more complicated cases, i.e. a layered polytropic atmosphere, the governing equations are examined numerically; computations are reasonably simple and efficient. © 1995, Cambridge University Press.     Notes: Abstract A critical review of hydrodynamical models with asymmetric stress tensor is given. Particular attention is focused on the balance law of angular momentum as the necessary element for a correct description of the internal motions of turbulent oriented eddies. On the basis of this analysis a non-equilibrium turbulence model is proposed that is shown to be close to the hydrodynamic equations with intrinsic rotation and helical turbulence. We employ this model in the study of the initial stage of thermal convection in a horizontal layer of a rotating non-equilibrium turbulent fluid that is heated from below. Linearizing the balance equations of mass, momentum, angular momentum and energy yields the boundary value problem, from which the general properties of the spectrum are determined. In the case of the horizontal layer with equilibrium boundary conditions on free boundaries we study the influence of the rotation and turbulent motion on the convective instability.

    Notes: Abstract In this article we demonstrate that turbulent stress contributions which depend on the rotation of the frame of reference (and therefore are system dependent) give rise to the inverse energy cascade, and thus introduce an ordering in the structure of turbulence. We first demonstrate that a non-rotating Boussinesq fluid subject to an artificial force that is not invariant under parity changes of the orthogonal group has a destabilizing effect in the B'enard problem. This destabilization is due to helicity and the stability regimes are divided into two regions: (1) If the helicitys is below a threshold values *, then long and very short wavelength disturbances at Rayleigh numbers Ra 〉 Racrit are stable whereas those with intermediate wavelengths are unstable. (2) If the helicitys 〉s * then all disturbances are unstable. For a rotating turbulent Boussinesq fluid we derive the most simple rotation dependent expression for the stress divergence and demonstrate that it leads quantitatively to a similar helicity dependent force. In the B6nard problem it gives rise to an analogous division of the stability/instability regime as obtained for non-rotating fluids subject to the artificial helicity dependent force.

    Notes: Summary We study the stability of thin films of fluids subject to gravity along inclined planes, obeying a power-law constitutive relation of the Ostwald-de Waele type. A first analysis, in which the inertia terms are ignored, shows such flow to be stable against small, linear perturbations; a second analysis, in which the inertia terms are included, proves that there are stable and unstable regimes that are separated by a critical Ostwald-de Waele number O. Numerical computations for selected values of O demonstrate the decay and growth rate behavior of some finite amplitude disturbances.
