    Description: The Spermonde Archipelago, off the coast of southwest Sulawesi, consists of more than 100 small islands and hundreds of shallow-water reef areas. Most of the islands are bordered by coral reefs that grew in the past in response to paleo relative sea-level changes. Remnants of these reefs are preserved today in the form of fossil microatolls. In this study, we report the elevation, age, and paleo relative sea-level estimates derived from fossil microatolls surveyed in five islands of the Spermonde Archipelago. We describe 24 new sea-level index points, and we compare our dataset with both previously published proxies and with relative sea-level predictions from a set of 54 glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models, using different assumptions on both ice melting histories and mantle structure and viscosity. We use our new data and models to discuss Late Holocene (0–6 ka) relative sea-level changes in our study area and their implications in terms of modern relative sea-level estimates in the broader South and Southeast Asia region.

    Description: Indonesia is a country composed of several thousand islands, many of them small, low-lying and densely inhabited. These are, in particular, subject to high risk of inundation due to future relative sea level changes. The Spermonde Archipelago, off the coast of Southwest Sulawesi, consists of more than 100 small islands. This study presents a dataset of 24 sea-level index points from fossil microatolls, surveyed on five islands in the Spermonde Archipelago and compares these new results with published data from the same region and with relative sea level predictions from different Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) models. The newly surveyed fossil microatolls are located around the islands of Tambakulu, Suranti (both ~ 60 km offshore of Makassar city), Bone Batang and Kodingareng Keke (both located in the center of the Archipelago) and Sanrobengi (located ~ 20 km south-southwest of Makassar). Results from the near- and mid-shelf islands indicate that relative sea level between 4 to 6 ka BP was less than one meter above present sea level. The only exception to this pattern is the heavily populated island of Barrang Lompo, where we record a significant subsidence when compared to the other islands. These new results support the conclusions from a previous dataset and are relevant to constrain late Holocene ice melting scenarios. Samples from the two outer islands (Tambakulu and Suranti) yielded ages spanning the Common Era that represent, to our knowledge, the first reported for the entire Southeast Asian region.

    Description: Coral mounds formed by framework-forming cold-water corals pierce the seabed along most continental margins of the Atlantic Ocean and new sites are continuously being discovered. Here, we describe an extremely high accumulation of coral mounds at the NW Moroccan Atlantic margin between 35°N and 35.5°N. Within an area of only 1,440 km2, 3,464 mounds were found exposed at the seabed. This dataset includes position and morphometry of these coral mounds located between~500 m and 1000 m water depth.

    Description: Bathymetry based on data recorded during RV MARIA S. MERIAN cruise MSM36 between 18.02.2014 and 17.03.2014 at the Moroccan continental margins. The cruise carried out multidisciplinary research on the long-term development of cold-water coral ecosystems in selected areas along the Moroccan continental margins in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Atlantic Ocean. The key instrument to be used during this expedition was the Bremen Deep Sea Drill Rig MeBo. CI Citation: Paul Wintersteller (seafloor-imaging@marum.de) as responsible party for bathymetry post-processing and its products. Description of processed data sources: During the RV MARIA S. MERIAN cruise MSM36, the Kongsberg EM122 multibeam echosounder with a nominal sounding frequency of 12 kHz was utilized. 288 beams (and up to 800 soundings with equidistant and dual swath mode) with a 2°(TX)/2°(RX) footprint are formed for each ping while the seafloor is detected using amplitude and phase information for each beam sounding. During the cruise, in the west of Melilla the acquisition computer of the EM122 failed, but could be repaired before entering the Atlantic region. The rest of the time the system was stable. Description of data processing: Postprocessing and products were conducted by the Seafloor-Imaging & Mapping group of MARUM/FB5, responsible person: Paul Wintersteller (seafloor-imaging@marum.de). The open source software MB-System suite (Caress, D.W., and D.N. Chayes, MB-System Version 5.5, open source software distributed from the MBARI and L-DEO web sites, 2000-2012.) was utilized for this purpose. A tide correction was applied, based on the Oregon State University (OSU) tidal prediction software (OTPS) that is retrievable through MB-System. CTD measurements taken during MSM36 were sufficient to represent the changes in the sound velocity throughout the study area. A part of the survey lines were missing the installation parameters due to the failure of the acquisition computer, therefore, the pitch, heave, heading and sonar offsets of the lever arms had to reapplied for these lines (mbset). Bathymetric data has been manually cleaned for existing artefacts with mbeditviz. NetCDF (GMT) grids of the product and the statistics were created using mbgrid No total propagated uncertainty (TPU) has been calculated to gather vertical or horizontal accuracy. The currently published bathymetric grid of the cruise has a resolution of 125 m. A higher resolution is, at least partly, achievable. The grid extended with _num represents a raster dataset with the statistical number of beams/depths taken into account to create the depth of the cell. The extended _sd -grid contains the standard deviation for each cell. All grids produced are retrievable through the PANGAEA database (www.pangaea.de). Chief Scientist: D.     Description: Multibeam bathymetry raw data using the ship's own Kongsberg EM 122 multibeam echosounder was almost continuously recorded during RV METEOR cruise M122. Data was recorded on 33 days between 2015-12-30 and 2016-01-31. This dataset contains a survey towards the coast of Namibia & Angola. The approximate average depth of the entire dataset is around 700m. The data are archived at the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie, BSH) and provided to PANGAEA database for data curation and publication. Ancillary sound velocity profiles (SVP) files from the cruise are archived at the BSH, thus SVP files are added to this dataset. Also data analysis of the multibeam raw data revealed that SVP has been changed during the survey. This publication is conducted within the efforts of the German Marine Research Alliance in the core area 'Data management and Digitalization' (Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung, DAM). Data are unprocessed and therefore contains incorrect depth measurements (artifacts) without further processing. Note that refraction errors can be expected due to the lack of proper SVP. Overall, it appears that the data quality is rather good since the gridded hillshade data showed relatively few obstacles. Data acquisition has been monitored at all times during surveying. Data can be processed e.g. with the open source software package MB-System (Caress, D. W., and D. N. Chayes, MB-System: Mapping the Seafloor, http://www.mbari.org/products/research-software/mb-system/, 2022).
