    Notes: Abstract  Long Lake, located near Lake Michigan within the dune-complexes of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, USA, was formed some time during the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. A surficial aquifer underlies Long Lake, which is either a source or sink for the later. The hydrologic processes in the lakeshore and surrounding environs have been significantly altered during the agricultural, municipal, and industrial development of the region. Limited data suggest that the organisms of Long Lake have elevated levels of several contaminants. This study attempts to quantify seepage within the lake to assess the potential threat to groundwater quality. Seepage measurements and minipiezometric tests were used to determine seepage within the lake. Seepage measurements and minipiezometric tests suggest that water seeps out of Long Lake, thus recharging the groundwater that flows southwest away from the lake. There is a great deal of variability in the seepage rate, with a mean of 11.5×10–4±11.2×10–4 m d–1. The mean seepage rate of 0.3 m yr–1 for Long Lake is greater than the 0.2 m yr–1 recharge rate estimated for the drainage basin area. The Long Lake recharge volume of 2.5×105 m3 yr–1 is approximately 22% of the volume of the lake and is significant when compared to the total surface recharge volume of 4.8×105 m3 yr–1 to the upper aquifer of the drainage area. There is a potential for contamination of the groundwater system through seepage from the lake from contaminants derived from aerial depositions.

    Notes: Ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of UBr4 and ThBr4 have been recorded in the gas-phase and interpreted using relativistic density functional calculations. For ThBr4, eight bands were observed which are interpreted as ionization from the five Br 4p symmetry orbitals of a Br4 unit in Td symmetry, with three of the bands [the (4t2)−1, (1t1)−1, and (3t2)−1 ionizations] each being split into two by spin–orbit interaction. The observed splittings are rationalized in terms of the Th 6p and Br 4p contributions to the orbitals and by comparison with the known ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of ThF4 and ThCl4. The first vertical ionization energy (VIE) of ThBr4 was measured as (10.92±0.03) eV. UBr4 shows a very similar photoelectron spectrum with an extra band at (9.65±0.02) eV VIE. This is associated with a (5t2)−1 (U 5f,6d) ionization. Supporting matrix isolation infrared experiments were also carried out under very similar vaporization conditions to those used in the photoelectron spectroscopy experiments to check the composition of the vapor beams used. In these experiments, the T2 stretching modes of ThBr4 and UBr4 have been measured as 230±2 and 239±2 cm−1, respectively. Both the photoelectron and infrared matrix isolation spectra are consistent with an effective tetrahedral geometry for UBr4 and ThBr4. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Angular distribution of photoelectrons for the photoionization processes O2+(X 2Πg,v+=0–3)+e−←O2(a1Δg)+hν has been studied at the photon energy of 21.22 eV and in the photon energy range 13.8–15.2 eV where the cross-sections for these processes show strong enhancement due to the presence of resonant transitions to a Rydberg state (C 2Φu,3sσg)p 1Φu. It has been found that the plot of the asymmetry parameter, β, against photon energy shows structure at energies corresponding to O2(p 1Φuv′)←O2(a 1Δgv″=0) excitations. The O2+(X 2Πg,v+)←O2(a 1Δg,v″=0) ionizations have also been investigated in the photon energy range 18.0–19.2 eV, where the presence of unassigned resonances was observed in earlier photoelectron spectroscopic work. In this energy range the plot of asymmetry parameter against photon energy also shows resonant structure. Suggestions for the excited states associated with these resonances have been made on the basis of constant-ionic-state spectra recorded at different angles. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Male convict cichlids Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum presented three females simultaneously were found to prefer larger females, even if a female's size exceeded their own. This indicates that some mechanism other than male choice, such as female choice or intrasexual competition, must contribute to male-larger assortative pairing in convict cichlids. Despite a preference for larger females, males continued to consort with smaller females when available, and a females attractiveness was a function of her size relative to other females.

    Notes: Abstract A complementary-DNA library to mRNA from castor-bean endosperm has been prepared. Three clones have been examined in detail. One of these is complementary to isocitrate-lyase mRNA. The other two clones code for proteins with M r , 42000 and 38000. All three clones have been used to measure levels of transcripts during seed germination. The three transcripts all increased during germination and the rate of their appearance is stimulated by exogenous GA3. The data strongly support the view that the action of GA3 in these seeds is to stimulate non-specifically the rate of transcription and, in turn, protein synthesis. Possible mechanisms for the action of the growth regulator are discussed.
