    Notes: A model nucleating agent for polypropylene crystallization is described. A series of compounds consisting mainly of organocarboxylic acid salts is evaluated as heterogeneous nucleating agent for polypropylene crystallization by measuring their effect upon the polymer supercooling. Sodium benzoate and basic aluminium dibenzoate were among the best nucleating agents found. The nucleating abilities of the various compounds are discussed in terms of their structural features.

    Notes: The effect of cooling, nucleation, and spherulitic growth rates on the properties of polypropylene is discussed briefly. A differential thermal analysis technique is described for evaluating the relative extent of heterogeneous nucleation that occurs in a particular polypropylene composition. The method is based upon a nucleating agent's ability to reduce the relatively large amount of supercooling that occurs upon crystallization of polypropylene. Compounds are shown to vary widely in their effectiveness as heterogeneous nucleating agents in polypropylene. The relationships between the degree of supercooling of a particular polypropylene composition and its relative clarity, tensile properties, density, and morphology are shown.

    Notes: Nineteen compounds are described that are effective heterogeneous nucleating agents for the crystallization of poly(vinylidene chloride-vinyl chloride) copolymers containing 7-13% vinyl chloride. Most of the compounds are relatively high-melting organic nitrogen heterocyclics. The more effective ones raise the polymer freezing points about 20-40°C using a prescribed thermal history.

    Notes: A method for evaluating compounds as nucleating agents in isotactic polystyrene (IPS) is described that involves measuring the polymer heat of fusion by differential scanning calorimetry after a prescribed thermal history. Twenty-nine compounds are described that increase the overall crystallization rate of three IPS samples. In general, the effective compounds contain an aromatic nucleus, are polyfunctional, and are high melting. Most are organic nitrogen heterocyclics. The most effective nucleating agents are thymine, melamine, oxamide, 2-hydroxybenzimidazole, and 4-hydroxy-6,7-dimethylpteridine. The use of plasticizers such as butyl stearate, diisobutyl adipate, or paraffin oil with nucleating agents often results in a synergistic increase in crystallinity.

    Notes: The crystalline high-performance polymers poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) and poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) are generally considered to be highly resistant to dissolution in most common solvents. This article reveals numerous compounds that dissolve in excess of 25 wt % of each polymer at elevated temperatures. Typical binary-phase diagrams depicting the minimum solubility temperature vs. concentration are also presented for several representative polymer-solvent mixtures for both PEEK and PPS. The phenomenon of the solvent-induced crystallization of PEEK is presented. The importance of these polymer-solvent systems for the preparation of permselective membranes is discussed.

    Notes: The effect of basic aluminium dibenzoate upon the supercooling of polypropylene fractions of molecular weight 9.2 × 103-1.25 × 106 was determined by differential thermal analysis. The response to heterogeneous nucleation within the precision of the method used appears to be only slightly dependent, if at all, upon the molecular weight of the polymer.
