Notes: [Auszug] For any stationary process (that is, in statistical equilibrium) with a finite number of possible states, we may define a 'lifetime' t and a 'recurrence time' for any specified state *\ Chandrasekhar's method of deriving the complete distribution for t (chapter 3) applies to any Markqff ...

Notes: [Auszug] PHYSICAL ideas which seem at first sight somewhat arbitrary become, as Eddington has stressed, almost inevitable when the relativity principle is taken to its proper conclusion. As examples may be quoted the law of gravitation, in which the radius of curvature anywhere in the universe is ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN statistical theory it has been for some time a discipline for statisticians to distinguish by appropriate notation a population parameter that is being estimated and the measure obtained from a sample that is to be its estimate. It is now, for example, common for a true population ...

Notes: The development of new drugs for treating Pneumocystis carinii infections in AIDS patients is hampered by the lack of long-term culture systems, and by our generally limited knowledge of this organism. Recently, however, we observed significant activity of various benzimidazoles against growth of this organism in short-term cultures. Benzimidazoles inhibit microtubule polymerization; there is strong evidence that the primary target is the β-tubulin subunit. To understand the basis for benzimidazole activity against P. carinii, and to examine the apparent relatedness of this organism to fungi, we have cloned and sequenced the single β-tubulin gene from a rat P. carinii isolate. There was 89-91% identity at the amino acid level to β-tubulins from filamentous fungi, but only 79-82% identity to yeast and protozoal β-tubulins. Also, eight introns were distributed throughout the P. cariniiβ-tubulin gene in a pattern characteristic of filamentous fungi. Specific residues previously implicated in benzimidazole sensitivity were conserved in P. cariniiβ-tubulin. The polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify a segment of P. cariniiβ-tubulin DNA from bronchoalveolar lavages obtained from two patients with AIDS. There was considerable divergence at the DNA level between the human and rat sequences, but 100% identity at the ammo-acid level.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR,Professor Lindley (Nature, 221, 594; 1969) is, like Matthew, entitled to his opinion, but I do not see that his comments in any way dispose of my criticisms. First of all, perhaps I could protest at the irrelevant remarks in his first paragraph, which includes an inaccurate reporting of what I ...

Notes: [Auszug] As before, let the total capacity of the dam be C and the initial content c. Suppose the water lost before the dam first reaches emptiness be W, and let H(a|c) = E(eaW\c), where E denotes expectation. For the simple discrete case with probability p of one unit input and q of one unit output, we ...

Notes: [Auszug] E. J. MACHIN1 appears to be unaware of the extensive study by G. E. Blackman2 on the relation between plant density and percentage absence. In a theoretical appendix to this paper, I have pointed out that the most efficient size of quadrat corresponds to about 20 ...
