Notes: Summary We discuss a simplified approach for the recollision part of the memory function for self-motion in ordinary and supercooled liquids. This part accounts for the substantial decrease of the diffusion coefficient with respect to the binary prediction, an effect which becomes larger and larger on cooling the system. The quantitative results compare satisfactorily with previous and new simulation data obtained for a liquid rubidium model both near the triple point and in moderately supercooled states.

Notes: Summary Results of extensive computer simulations performed in liquid water are reported in order to clarify the main features of dynamical density correlations in this system. Puzzling aspects, such as the anomalous sound wave propagation at finite wave vectors, are related to the peculiar structural aspects of this hydrogen-bonded liquid. Additional features (such as the evolution of the relevant memory functions at increasing wave vectors and the emergency of a second mode in the longitudinal current spectra) are also discussed in some detail.

Notes: Summary The dynamics associated with the magnetization fluctuations in Heisenberg ferromagnets in an external field is investigated both by a purely microscopic approach and by a projection operator technique which emphasizes the role of quasi-conserved, collective dynamical variables. Particular attention is devoted to «hydrodynamic» wave vectors and frequencies; in such a situation the projection operator technique proves very convenient, and in particular at low temperatures the inclusion of the momentum density in the set of relevant variables gives rise to a new excitation, referred to as «second magnon» by previous authors. Its appearance in the longitudinal spectra is studied for arbitrary dimensionalityd: in particular, the theory is applied both to thed=1 classical case (where second magnons have been observed in simulation experiments) and to thed=3 quantum case, where the conditions for the observability of the effect in real systems are discussed.

Notes: Results are presented for the transverse current correlation functions and their spectra obtained by molecular dynamics simulation of liquid hydrogen chloride (HCl) at 201 K. To rationalize the results we analyze the data in the framework of the Mori–Zwanig theory and calculate the first order memory functions. This is done both in and exactly from the simulation data and by suitable approximations with one and two decay rates. It is found that the simple viscoelastic approximation with a single relaxation time is not sufficient to describe the dynamics of HCl whereas the extended model with two relaxation-times function accounts quite well for the simulation data in the low wave-number regime. Hydrogen bonding is found to play only a minor role in the dynamics of the liquid and the main features compare well with a simple liquidlike argon. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
