    Notes: Competitive success in business-to-business markets often depends upon the ability of the firm to adapt specifically to the needs of a single customer organization. Research into buyer-seller relationships in industrial markets has shown that both buying and selling firms implement specific adaptations for a single partner. Adaptation can take place at the level of the product or more broadly in terms of management processes, information exchange, and even organizational restructuring. The paper develops an improved taxonomy for dyadic adaptation in business-to-business markets, and explores the driving forces behind relationship-specific adaptation. Adaptation by supplier firms is found to be more frequent than adaptation by buyers. Supplier adaptation is driven by relative power, buyer support, and by the managerial preferences of the two firms for a more or less relational form of exchange. Several managerial implications and avenues for further research are discussed.

    Notes: The present study compares the relative costs of stocking ponds with postlarvae from wild or domesticated Kuruma shrimp, Penaeus japonicus (Bate), broodstock. Wild broodstock were obtained from a commercial trawler. Domesticated broodstock were reared to harvest size (wet weight = 25 g) on a commercial farm and then transferred to controlled environment tanks where they were grown to a final wet weight of 50 g. The costs of stocking ponds with postlarvae were calculated from the observed reproductive output, the costs of purchasing wild broodstock and the costs of domesticated broodstock production in the controlled environment facility. Domesticated P. japonicus spawned comparable numbers of eggs to wild broodstock of similar size, but hatching success was significantly lower. A total of 12 domesticated P. japonicus broodstock would be needed to produce the postlarvae to stock a 1-ha pond, compared to only six wild broodstock. However, the much higher relative costs of wild broodstock means that the cost of using their postlarvae would be Aus$851 per pond compared to Aus$390 for domesticated broodstock. The present authors conclude that the use of domesticated P. japonicus broodstock could be a cost-effective alternative to wild broodstock in Australia and in other countries where P. japonicus is farmed.

    Notes: Oscillations with toroidal mode number n=1 are ubiquitous in helicity injected spheromaks and spherical tokamaks, and play a crucial role in current drive. It has been proposed that these arise from a current driven instability of the open flux tube. Stability calculations are presented to confirm this, and they are compared with experimental data from the Spheromak Experiment (SPHEX) [M. Rusbridge et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 39, 683 (1997)]. The equilibria are modelled as piece-wise constant μ profile force-free plasmas with different values for the μ in the open (μc) and closed (μa) flux regions. A stability map in μc,μa space is then calculated. The SPHEX experimental data is also reduced to the same space both as a culmination of direct single point measurements of μ and as a time history of the reconstructed equilibrium from a particular shot. The results show a favorable comparison of the stability map with experiment, both in magnitude and shape. The effect of inserting a central current-carrying rod on the stability is also discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The wave-induced chaotic radial transport of energetic electrons has been observed in a laboratory terrella, the Collisionless Terrella Experiment (CTX) [H. P. Warren and M. E. Mauel, Phys. Plasmas 2, 4185 (1995)]. In the experiment electron-cyclotron-resonance heating (ECRH) is used to create a localized population of trapped energetic electrons which excite drift-resonant electrostatic fluctuations. Measurements with multiple high-impedance floating potential probes are used to determine the amplitude, frequency, and mode structure of the observed fluctuations. Energetic electron transport is observed with gridded particle detectors. Poincaré surfaces of section indicate that increases in the flux of energetic electrons to the detectors occur only when fluctuations which meet the conditions for global chaos are present. Quasilinear transport simulations do not reproduce several important features of the experimental measurements. In contrast, Hamiltonian simulations reproduce many of the salient temporal characteristics of the experimental measurements and indicate that the persistence of phase-space correlations plays an important role in the energetic electron transport observed in the experiment. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High-confinement (H-mode) operation is the choice for next-step tokamak devices based either on conventional or advanced tokamak physics. This choice, however, comes at a significant cost for both the conventional and advanced tokamaks because of the effects of edge localized modes (ELMs). ELMs can produce significant erosion in the divertor and can affect the beta limit and reduced core transport regions needed for advanced tokamak operation. Experimental results from DIII-D [J. L. Luxon et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. I, p. 159] this year have demonstrated a new operating regime, the quiescent H-mode regime, which solves these problems. We have achieved quiescent H-mode operation that is ELM-free and yet has good density and impurity control. In addition, we have demonstrated that an internal transport barrier can be produced and maintained inside the H-mode edge barrier for long periods of time (〉3.5 s or 〉25 energy confinement times τE), yielding a quiescent double barrier regime. By slowly ramping the input power, we have achieved βNH89=7 for up to 5 times the τE of 150 ms. The βNH89 values of 7 substantially exceed the value of 4 routinely achieved in the standard ELMing H mode. The key factors in creating the quiescent H-mode operation are neutral beam injection in the direction opposite to the plasma current (counter injection) plus cryopumping to reduce the density. Density and impurity control in the quiescent H mode is possible because of the presence of an edge magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillation, the edge harmonic oscillation, which enhances the edge particle transport while leaving the energy transport unaffected. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Models of the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability of spheromaks and spherical tokamaks are presented, including the effects of current on the open flux which plays a key role in helicity-injected current drive. The stability of spheromak equilibria with both open and closed flux and realistic current profiles representative of helicity-injected state is investigated, where a kink instability in the open flux is shown to dominate a tilt mode in the closed flux as the open flux current density is increased. A previous one-dimensional model is extended to more realistic two-dimensional equilibria which properly incorporate a region of closed magnetic flux as well as open flux penetrating the boundaries at electrodes. A new stability code SCOTS has been developed and benchmarked which can determine the growth rates of ideal MHD modes in this geometry. The coordinate system for this code has been developed such that it extends smoothly across the separatrix between closed and open flux, thus not imposing any unphysical discontinuities in mode structures. From the results, the operating conditions of devices can be predicted since helicity-injection current drive requires fluctuations which arise from the saturated current driven instability in the open flux, and since these systems operate near the stability boundary for this mode. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
