Notes: The necessity of maintaining optimal operations and becoming an agile and responsive enterprise is becoming increasingly important to survive in the global market. Consequently, all resources in the companies need to be effectively marshalled. Traditionally SMEs have concentrated on the 4Ms ± money, materials, machine and manpower but have often neglected the effective management of information, which many authors suggest is at the heart of any agile organisation. The effect is inadequate or fragmented information systems (IS) that do not address the demands of operational or the wider strategic needs of the company. The study reported here examines the diversities of problems that occur in three different companies and, compares their systems to the ideals of agile manufacturing.

Notes: Information systems (ISs) are at the heart of any responsive organisation. However current tools and techniques of evaluation and design of ISs are not well suited to the needs of small and medium sized companies, and the achievement of their strategic, commercial and operational goals, and perhaps not even to those of larger organisations. The failure rate in the use of many computer-based systems is very high especially in manufacturing organisations. This suggests that a new and simpler technique is required to lay down the foundation for an IS at an early stage in the development of a company. This system must be capable of being applied by non-specialist managers but nevertheless be one that incorporates all of the elements of information, in circumstances which may be a mix of technology-based and manual systems. This paper proposes the design of a simple audit tool that may be used in any area of a company's organisation to aid in the evaluation, planning and design of holistic ISs in SMEs.

Notes: Many uncertainties in Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems are treated as "controllable" elements, with a variety of buffering, dampening and other approaches being used to cope with them. However, such approaches are often found wanting, forcing enterprises into emergency measures to ensure delivery performance. Based upon the results of a questionnaire survey, this paper analyses the uncertainties in the aggregate, intermediate and operational levels that affect customer delivery performance in MRP environments. These uncertainties have been quantified and the relative importance to performance has been investigated. The results also show the widespread use of buffering, dampening and other approaches to provide a level of delivery reliability. It is contended that by concentrating on minimising the effects of the uncertainties, the underlying causes have not been addressed, resulting in sub-optimisation of system performance.

Notes: This paper describes a systematic approach to the design and development of a tool management system for the valve production unit of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) located in Trichirapalli, India. The salient features of the design and development of a centralised database for tools that contains information regarding tooling, tool location, allo-cation, tool flow, tool storage and retrieval, parts, machines, etc. are discussed. It is estimated that the system being developed will significantly reduce the downtime of machines due to unavailability of the appropriate tools.

Notes: Abrasive reaming has been successfully applied for internal finishing of cylindrical sections to produce highly accurate bore characteristics, i.e. diameter, cylindricity, surface finish, straightness and roundness. The process is an alternative to honing and cylindrical grinding whose mechanics are more complex and expensive. This success has, however, been manually orientated with little use of computer aids. To achieve a given bore geometry and maintain low scrap rates, a knowledge- based system may be used to optimise the reaming process. This paper proposes a generic knowledge-based system, called SAR using parameters which significantly influence the reaming process, identified from Taguchi-based experimental analysis. The main objective of the system is to determine process limits, detect uncontrollable situations, identify causes and suggest corrective actions, in order to achieve a better overall bore profile.

Notes: Abstract The effects of carbaryl (1-naphthalenyl methylcarbamate), commonly used in agricultural operations, have been studied with reference to survival, behavior, food intake, growth, and conversion efficiency of the catfishMystus vittatus. At a concentration of 32.5 ppm, carbaryl caused 100% mortality within 24 hr; the 72 hr LC50 was 17.5 ppm. At concentrations of 12.5 ppm and below, it caused no mortalities within 72 hr. But such sublethal concentrations accelerated the swimming activity and increased the frequency of opercular beats. The latter response was dose-dependent. These behavioral changes were the immediate response to the toxicant and were indicators of possible stress. A 27-day exposure to sublethal concentrations of carbaryl led to a decrease in feeding rate and growth rate. The latter decreased from 10.15 mg/g/day (freshwater) to 2.84 mg/g/day (12.5 ppm). The reduced growth and conversion efficiency may be due to the expenditure of more energy for the purpose of maintenance. Therefore, the insecticide is considered to be a metabolic Stressor.

Notes: Abstract The direct slicing of CAD models created in CADDS V to generate geometric data for rapid prototyping using fused feposition modeling technique (FDM) is presented in this paper. The report file from an explicit model is accessed for obtaining model data. Algorithms have been developed for determining the volumes of model material as well as support materials. New algorithms have been developed for filling the sheet solid. A simulation module has been developed to verify whether the filling is correctly done. Example of a model is manufactured using this approach is also presented in this paper.
