    Description: The making of large astronomical mirrors with borosilicate glass honeycomb structure is discussed. Particular attention is given to a single casting technique for making borosilicate honeycomb mirror blanks up to 7 meters in diameter. Current work on the development of this technique involves the casting of blanks 60 cm in diameter which have the full thickness (33 cm), cell size (15 cm), and faceplate thickness (2.5 cm) needed for a 1.8-m mirror.

    Notes: Abstract Aerodynamic data on the axial velocity and turbulence development of free slot jets is presented. Jets varying from 0.0635 to 0.375 inches (1.59 to 9.53 mm) in width and with air velocities between 2,000 and 10,000 ft/min (10.2 to 50.8 m/sec) were examined. This study was the first phase of a research program aimed at developing empirical data describing impinging slot jet heat transfer commonly used in veneer drying.

    Notes: Summary The heat transfer of two-dimensional impinging air jets was examined. Jet widths from 0.0625 to 0.3750 inches (1.59 to 9.53 mm) operating at exit velocities from 2,000 to 10,000 ft/min (10.2 to 50.8 in/sec) were used. Average and local heat transfer coefficients were measured for jet arrays having a variety of different vertical and horizontal spacings. Predictive equations describing average heat transfer data were obtained which explain approximately 95 percent of the measured variation. Jet exit velocity and the lateral distance between the centerline of adjacent jets had the greatest influence on heat transfer.

    Notes: Abstract The literature on the heat transfer occurring from impinging hot air jets, now employed in many driers is reviewed. Variations in average and local heat transfer coefficients and other parameters are discussed in respect to jet air velocity, distance from jet to the impinged surface, and jet turbulence level. Areas which require additional research are pointed out, in addition to a discussion on elementary heat transfer and a brief review of research on mass transfer occurring under impinging jets.

    Notes: Summary Severity of kiln schedules used to dry wood has traditionally been determined after the fact. As an alternative, analytical indices using integral calculus have been developed to rate kiln schedule severity. Theoretical justification is presented for the general form of an index as well as for several specific cases. Possible uses of this type of index are also indicated. The indices take into account the dry and wet bulb temperatures used throughout a schedule as well as the duration of application and points of application of each combination of temperature and humidity used.

    Notes: Summary A previous article presented the theoretical development of analytical indices to rate the severity of kiln schedules used to dry wood. These indices take into account the dry and wet bulb temperatures used during a kiln schedule together with the points of application and duration of application of each combination of temperature and humidity used. Experimental data for several such indices are presented for collapse development during the kiln drying of incense cedar pencil slats. While promising, the results were inconclusive as to the use of a severity integral for prediction of the effect of different schedules or schedule changes on drying degrade. A lack of homogeneity in the test material confounded the results.
